Affiliates earn by promoting the products and services of others. Therefore they are the third parties that connect the consumer to the products and services. Online affiliate marketers function like advertisers or marketers in the mainstream business. They are responsible for creating a favourable market environment for customers to buy the products and services. Online affiliates make use of web space and web technologies to disperse essential information as well as convincing messages that are intended to build good image of the products.

Affiliate marketing gives a great opportunity as one good profession people can get involved in from their homes. Thousands of people actively participate to make things happen. However, some people start prematurely and end up without making any significant contribution. We have listed some common mistakes which affiliate marketers, especially the beginners commit. Five of them are:

The wrong time: As they say “haste makes waste.” So there is no need to hurry once you have decided to try your luck in affiliate business. Beginners in online affiliate business can be classified as those who have the primary resource - websites and those who do not have one. Those who have websites and are not yet engaged in affiliate business are likely to hurry and chose a merchant out of the box. They repent later. Those who do not have websites they hurry too and within days come out with a website, ignoring all the time that there are other things to be taken care of, like promotion of their own web resources and a thorough knowledge about the working of Internet marketing.

The wrong merchants: Well, picking up the wrong man is most likely to happen after the initial haste. On the other hand you may take your time and still pick up the wrong merchant. An affiliate who wishes to promote the products and services of a merchant must have a fair knowledge as who the merchant is and his profile in the marketing industry. You cannot be promoting any material which has been banned or any service which has not been approved by the legislating bodies. Do not get yourself caught in scandals and hypocrisy, do a proper background check of the merchant and then only decide.

Going for everyone: Some affiliates, once they are ready get so excited with the deals and offers forwarded by merchants that they jump into too many waters. If you are interested in making your service available to more than one merchant, be sensible and choose few. There are two disadvantages for joining too many affiliate programs. One is that it is hard to manage your account with the merchant and the other is that too many products or services will steal the very nature of your website. It will be shapeless and the audience would definitely feel in-congruent.

Gain but no pain: You must have heard about this maxim ‘No pain no gain.’ It rightly applies in our case. If you care about deals only, making money by publishing whatever comes, or putting any sort of content on your website you may end up losing your own resource credibility. Therefore it is very important to upgrade your own webs resource as well as look for monetary benefits. If there happens to be a conflict between the two, give it a consideration.

Self evaluation: There are lots of people who claim to be the leaders in the market after making some extra money. Evaluation is good and it helps in measuring the level of progress you are in. But beware of self proclamations without external validations. You will do fine and more tricks you will learn yourself.
