Home Air Purifiers Help Eliminate Indoor Air Pollution

Posted: Dec 22, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Indoor air pollution is a fact of life. With the push to increase energy efficiency standards within homes and buildings, engineers have designed structures using modern materials with efficiency in mind. The only problem with high efficiency design is that the air inside can stagnate and build up a continuously increasing level of indoor air pollutants. What are some examples of indoor air pollutants?

The answer to this question will vary depending on the age of the home or building in question. Fresh construction materials are notorious for releasing gases and vapors that are less than desirable and in some cases downright toxic if the levels are high enough.
VOCs are a major culprit. VOC stands for volatile organic compound and are present in most materials made from petrochemicals such as window and bathroom caulk, carpets, even the glue used to hold pressed board together which usually runs through all of the walls in a house.

One of the best ways to tell if the materials in your house are releasing VOCs is to simply smell them. That new house smell is the release of the chemical agents that keep liquid materials solvent. When they are released, the material cures and dries.

Building materials are not the only places you will find chemicals. The types of chemicals you find in your house will depend on the activities taking place. Many times you will find them in simple things. For example, model airplane glue many times has toluene in it. Toluene is a substituted form of benzene, a highly carcinogenic aromatic compound that is also found in gasoline. Chemical like these must be avoided and removed from the air you breathe.
A home air purifier can go to great lengths to eliminate indoor air pollution. If you run an indoor air purifier that has both carbon and HEPA filters, you will go to great lengths to eliminate both organics and particulates that can irritate your respiratory system.
