Ashiatsu massage therapy and continuing education

The last several years has brought to my attention a trend in massage therapy continuing education classes which is most disturbing.  Perhaps the trend I see has always been present and I was unaware. Either way, the audacity of some therapists to conduct themselves as they do is nothing short of mind boggling.

I know, very well, two innovators in massage who have taken, what anybody with any sense of education would agree, the proper methodology to creating a massage modality which is meant to benefit client and massage therapist alike.  These women spent months upon months honing their modality with the help of history, science, doctors and various other sources to come up with a safe, practical and effective modality.  This takes time - and lots of it.  Time is money, as often repeated by many of us in business for ourselves would agree.  Thus, bringing to the masses a modality of great benefit should be looked upon as respectful.  In line with the respect issue we, as massage practitioners, should value these original modalities as taught by the originators and their direct line of authorized instructors and frequent and promote such companies.

This takes me to the issue of all the off-shoots of any given modality.  I have read several sites which claim to offer a given modality only to discover that the instructors credentials are based in "common sense" and having watched you-tube videos of others performing the modality.  You have got to be kidding me.  As much as I admire the possibility that common sense can take us very far I am not inclined to seek a car mechanic to operate on my heart, nor a doctor to tear apart my fuel injection system.  So why would I take a continuing education class from somebody who learned their craft from several you-tube videos and a false sense of common sense.

Much of the blame here goes to the governing boards which hand out accredidation to hacks and/or thieves.  Do massage therapists really want to cheapen their profession by allowing darn near anybody to be given the right to offer "quality" continuing education certification?  Without the quality you merely have a bunch of hobbyists taking advice and instruction from other hobbyists.  This is not professional.

For the sake of this wonderful field of massage therapy let us all demand a higher qualification system for our continuing education.  As therapists, look into those from whom you wish to take classes.  What are their credentials?  Are their similar modalities to the one you wish to learn?  Do the homework.  Without doing so you run the inevitable risk of devaluing your own profession.  Get the facts, ask for real credentials.

Give me your thoughts.  More to come later.

BTW: sites of quality continuing education would include:
