Ayurveda - Can Ayurvedic Herbs Heal Damaged Hair

Ayurvedic treatment for hair damage is not as simple as buying the correct shampoo or conditioner. Ayurvedic for hair just like any ayurvedic treatment has balance or harmony of mind, spirit and body at its core. If external or internal forces create imbalance in our lives then our physical body suffers. In effect ayurvedic medicine for hair is medicine for the body, mind and spirit.

Ayurvedic hair care must have at least two components to them, clearing the mind and spirit of stress and the use of topical treatments to address the body or physical component. A good example of a herb that can do both of these would be the ayurvedic hair oil Brahmi. Applying 2-3 teaspoons of brahmi oil on the scalp and messaging gently for 10 minutes not only coats our hair giving it strength, body and shine but its fragrance is known to bring about relaxation.

The physical properties of the ayurvedic hair oil makes each strand healthier however the relaxation and mental clarity the fragrant massage brings, reduces stress. And stress even medical doctors will agree is damaging to our hair, skin and over all health. Other ayurvedic hair care oils that enhance blood circulation and nourishes the hair and scalp are Coconut or sesame oil which are mixed with Amalaki, Bhringaraj or hibiscus. A scalp massage in general also helps one manage stress, which is why in ayurvedic for hair it is advised this be done 3 times a week.

Another type of ayurvedic medicine for hair is the herbal drink. It calms us and clears our mind of anxiety. An example would be the jatamamsi and brahmi anti-stress tea. Combine equal proportions of jatamamsi and brahmi then steep 1 teaspoon of this mix in 1 cup of hot water then drink it twice or 3 times a day. Aloe Vera Juice is also good for ayurvedic hair care. 1/3 cup a day will reduce stress and or anxiety.
