Leg pain is the outcome of one or many of the several traumatic and non-traumatic causes that lead to tissue inflammation, affecting the bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, blood vessels, nerves and skin. Some back ailment may also cause pain that may radiate to the legs. The anatomy of the legs consists in the skeletal structure made up of two major bones, femur or thigh bone and tibia, and also the fibula of the shin. Toes and feet are made up of tiny pieces of bones. Hip, knee and ankle joints are the major joints, and the joints are held in place by thick tissue bands known as ligaments. The bone heads meeting at a joint bears cartilages that allow a friction less and free range of motion for the two bones at a joint.

The muscles attached to bones with the help of tendons, contract, allowing movement of the joint. The major muscles include the buttocks, quadriceps or front of thigh muscles, hamstrings or back of thigh muscles and calf muscles or gastrocnemius. There are two sets of blood vessels: the arterial system supplying legs with oxygenated blood from heart and the venous system draining carbon dioxide loaded waste blood back to heart. Nerves from spinal cord carry signals from the brain to legs and from legs to brain, allowing purposeful movement and accounting for the sensations of pain, pressure, touch, temperature and position. Illness or injury can disturb any of these structures causing pain in leg
