Painful bladder syndrome, medically known as interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition that is characterized by a combination of bladder pain, pain in pelvis and uncomfortable bladder pressure which can range from mild burning sensation or discomfort to severe pain.

Recent studies have revealed that interstitial cystitis is a chronic condition that affects around 1 million Americans every year. Though this disease usually affects women, but it can affect children and men as well. The worst thing about this disease is that it can have a long-lasting adverse impact on the quality of the affected people's lives. So, before you get into a worse condition of the disease you should stay conscious enough about this disease. Well, in order to stay so you need to know the reasons and symptoms of this disease.

Causes:

Human bladder is a muscular, hollow and balloon-shaped organ that stores urine until the body is ready to empty it. The adult people's bladder expands until the optimum condition and then sends a signal to the brain that it's the time to urinate and this communication is done through the pelvic nerves. If a person gets affected by interstitial cystitis then this signal somehow gets mixed up and as a result the person feels the urge to urinate more often than and that too with smaller volumes of urine lesser than normal quantity.

Symptoms:

It has been noticed that the symptoms of interstitial cystitis vary from person to person and the symptoms may also vary over time. Doctors have noticed that the disease shows different types of symptoms in different situations like seasonal allergies, stress, sexual activity and menstruation. The most common symptoms suffered by majority of the interstitial cystitis affected people are:

Urgent as well as persistent need to urinate.
Frequent urination of small amounts, throughout the day and night..
Pain in the pelvis area or between the vagina and anus in women and the scrotum and anus in men
Pain in the Pelvis area during sexual intercourse.
Many men experience painful ejaculation.

Chronic bacterial prostatitis. This prostatitis infection is still caused by bacteria but the chronic tag is given by doctors to indicate that the symptoms have been present for at least six months. It does not come on suddenly and the only symptom a man may have is the pain and irritation caused by repeated bladder infections caused by a defect in the prostate gland which permits bacteria to colonise the urinary tract.

Chronic Prostatitis is also known as Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome. This is a non bacterial prostatitis and, again, chronic means that it has been present for more than six months. It is most commonly found in men aged 35-45 years and is characterised by pelvic or perineal pain but no urinary tract infection. Post ejaculatory pain is also a frequent symptom. In its inflammatory form, tests on urine, semen and other prostatic fluids show the presence of dead white blood cells but no evidence of a known infecting organism whereas in its non-inflammatory form there are no white blood cells. Frequent urination and increased urgency may suggest interstitial cystitis (inflammation centred in bladder rather than prostate).

The final category is Asymptomatic Inflammatory Prostatitis where the patient has infection-fighting cells in the semen but no prostatitis pain or other symptoms and this is condition is often discovered when tests are being carried out for fertility issues or prostate cancer.

The acupuncture treatment is individualized to each patient's symptoms. The goal of the treatment is to balance the disharmony and stop pain. For some, this may also include stopping bleeding, smoothing urination, and clearing cloudiness. The treatment achieves this goal by regulating the qi flow throughout the body, particularly the lower abdomen and sacral regions.

Acupuncture points for chronic prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndrome tend to be on the lower abdomen, lower back, sacrum, and legs. Electroacupuncture and moxibustion may also be used to augment the acupuncture itself. Generally, a treatment course consists of five to ten acupuncture treatments once or twice a week. For chronic prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndrome, improvement is gradual but can be long lasting.
