Common Bacterial Infections of the Skin

The skin has the major surface area of all of the body organs and is the most exposed organ. Our skin is mass to a number of bacteria. There are lots of types of bacteria, both good and bad. In fact, most bacterial species cannot cause disease. Many species even play beneficial roles producing antibiotics and foodstuffs. The soil teems with free-living bacteria that perform many essential functions in the biosphere, like nitrogen fixation.

Skin infections can occur on the skin surface or deeper within the skin tissue. Bacterial Skin Infections are caused by the presence and growth of microorganisms that damage host tissue. Common bacterial infections of the skin involve impetigo, folliculitis or furunculosis, simple abscesses, erysipelas and other nonnecrotizing cellulitis.

Botulism and Bacterial Infections

Botulism is a muscle-paralyzing illness caused by a toxin made by a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. Symptoms of botulism comprise double vision, blurred vision, drooping eyelids, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth and muscle disadvantage.

Cellulitis and Bacterial Infections

Cellulitis is a disease of the dermis and subcutaneous tissue that has poorly bounded borders and is usually caused by Streptococcus or Staphylococcus species. Cellulitis commonly occurs near breaks in the skin, such as surgical wounds, trauma, tinea infections, or ulcerations. Cellulitis can arise on any part of the body.

Erythrasma and Bacterial Infections

Erythrasma is a superficial skin infection caused by corynebacteria that commonly occurs in intertriginous spaces. The infected skin is frequently reddish-brown, may be vaguely raised from the surrounding skin and may look the appearance of central clearing. The lesions are largely confluent but may have poorly defined borders.

Ecthyma and Bacterial Infections

Ecthyma is a deeper version of impetigo that usually forms on the legs. Ecthyma occurs in debilitated persons, such as patients with poorly controlled diabetes. It causes large boils, crusts, and deep sores that leave scars.

Folliculitis and Bacterial Infections

Folliculitis is an infection in the hair follicles. It is inclined to be on surface of the opening of the pore or deeper in the tissue. This is most frequently reason by staphylococcus aureus. A folliculitis looks like small, yellow pustules that are confined to the hair follicle. The most widespread form is superficial folliculitis.

Impetigo and Bacterial Infections

Impetigo is an ordinary infection in kids that may also occur in adolescents. It is generally caused by either Staphylococcus aureus or streptococci. Impetigo is most commonly glance in children aged two to five years. Impetigo may present in two forms little vesicles with a honey-colored crust or purulent-appearing bullae.
