Description
A hernia occurs when internal tissue bulges out through a weakened area of the abdominal muscles. Although there are many types of hernias, most people associate the term with an inguinal hernia. This type of hernia generally affects men and is located where the spermatic cord that suspends the testis passes out of the abdomen and into the scrotum. It occurs when the inguinal ring-the ring of muscular tissue surrounding this opening-becomes weakened, allowing part of the intestine to push through. This portion of intestine often produces a noticeable bulge.
There are other types of hernias. An umbilical hernia occurs when a portion of the small intestine pushes through the abdominal wall near the navel. This type of hernia is most common among pregnant and obese women. Another type of hernia, known as an incisional hernia, is caused when intestines pass through the site of a previous surgery. A hiatal hernia may also be caused by obesity, pregnancy, aging, or previous surgery. About 50% of all people with hiatal hernias do not have any symptoms. If symptoms exist they will include heartburn, usually 30-60 minutes following a meal. There may be some mid chest pain due to gastric acid from the stomach being pushed up into the esophagus. The pain and heartburn are usually worse when lying down. Frequent belching and feelings of abdominal fullness may also be present.
Signs and Symptoms
Tender lump or swelling in the groin area, especially after heavy lifting or straining

Conventional Medical Treatment
If you suspect that you have a hernia, see your physician, who can usually diagnose the condition by physically examining and pressing on the tender area. While some mild hernias heal on their own, others can result in the intestinal tissue becoming tightly pinched by the abdominal muscle. This can cause the affected portion of intestine to die, which results in a life-threatening situation. For this reason, your physician may suggest surgery to repair the hernia.
Surgery for hernias usually entails physically pushing the intestine back into the abdomen (while the patient is anaesthetized) and sewing together any weakened muscles. Recovery after surgery usually takes six to eight weeks, during which time you must abstain from strenuous physical activity.
