Conjunctivitis is a common eye disease that may be caused by excessive eye strain or infections due virus or bacteria. Due to conjunctivitis the eyes turn pink and hence the problem is often called pink eyes. This causes irritation and soreness in the eyes. Giant papillary pink eye affects people who wear outdated contact lenses. Those who wear contact lenses must check their eyes at least once a year and change the lenses if necessary. If virus is the cause of the conjunctivitis, antibiotics will not be of much use. If allergy or any foreign object is the cause of pinkeye, a special eye drop can be recommended that deal with the symptoms of the allergy. Splashing warm water on the eyes can help ease the itching.

You can also use Eyebright. Infuse a teaspoon of the herb in a cup of hot water. Allow to cool, strain. Put the tea in an eye cup (available at pharmacies) and use it in the recommended way. Treating conjunctivitis is very important. This is especially true in cases where the condition is severe. If left untreated, this may become a persistent problem or it can cause serious damage to your eye tissue. Because of this, it is crucial that you take an active approach towards your health with a healthy diet and a few immune boosting methods.

Alternative treatments for pinkeye in under developed countries include topical povidone-iodine (betadine) which is effective against most bacterial conjunctivitis at a fraction of the cost of standard antibiotic prescription eye drops. Povidone is sometimes used off label by optometrists to treat EKC, a special severe from of viral conjunctivitis. Wash all infected towels, face cloths and bed linens separately from the family's other laundry. Use detergent and the hottest water setting. Boiling them is even better. Wash all infected towels, face cloths and bed linens separately from the family's other laundry. Use detergent and the hottest water setting. Do not let your child share towels or washcloths with anyone else, because this could spread infection.

Conjunctivitis may respond to homeopathic treatment. However, the selection of a remedy-more than one is available-depends on your symptoms and the stage of the condition. Don't try treating this disorder yourself. See a homeopathic professional. Your doctor may prescribe drops or ointment, or both. Drops stay in the eyes for a shorter time, but ointment tends to blur the vision. Sometimes your doctor may prescribe drops by day, with ointment at night. Cold compresses and dark glasses are comforting. In acute cases, you will probably be given antibiotic eye drops by your doctor, who will also check that there is no mechanical cause of the infection, such as a trapped eyelash or embedded particle of dirt. Steroid drops are frequently prescribed for allergic conjunctivitis and bring considerable relief. They will probably contain an anti-fungal agent, such as neomycin.

In order to reduce spread of conjunctivitis you should wash your hands and face frequently with Johnson's Baby Shampoo for 5-7 days. Only use fresh or disposable towels. Make sure to change your sheets and pillow cases daily for 5 days and change your clothing twice daily.
