Dehydrated Skin Treatment

Dehydration is a lack of water and moisture in the outer layers of the skin. The skin loses elasticity, much like a sponge without water in it and when facial movements occur it moves around without the suppleness of plump moist cells. This then leads to very fine, crepey lines across the skin. This can be the start of permanent deeper lines.

Dehydration means there is an excessive dead cell buildup on the surface of your skin, and therefore you need to exfoliate (manually remove the dead skin). No amount of moisturizing will truly fix the problem, but through regular and thorough exfoliation, you can greatly reduce or eliminate dehydration. Dehydrated skin is lacking water, not oil.

Skin that is dehydrated often looks sallow, worn, dry, and wrinkled. In order to keep skin's collagen intact, you must make sure that you consume enough water. Many people try time and again to find the latest anti-aging trick. The truth is that water is one of the most important things you can do to maintain your skin's collagen.

Dehydration of the skin is a loss of water through the elements like wind and sun. Moisture evaporates rapidly through the skin. Some signs of this are tightness, those dreaded fine lines, a lack of radiance, and loss of elasticity. Once this damage occurs, the skin will no longer be a good barrier against the environment. When I use my moisturizer and then lick my lips, I can feel the moisturizer instantly drawn to the moisture, which is exactly what it should do.

To treat dehydrated skin, you need to:

1. Use daily cleansing according to your skin's needs (dry, combo, oily).

2. Use exfoliation - to allow any treatments to absorb better since you are removing any dead skin (flakes).

3. Rebuild your moisture barrier.

Inadequate water intake causes dehydration. First tip, drink at least eight glasses of water every day besides other beverages you drink during the day. Avoid alcoholic beverages, bubbly drinks, sodas and carbonated water as it draws fluids from the body and lowering the body's water content. Increase your intake of purified water.

causes of dehydration of the skin.

1- Prolonged exposure to the sun, cold weather or windy environment
2- Taking long hot showers
3- Less water consumption
4- Too much alcohol and caffeine
5- Smoking
6- Too much medications

Symptoms of a dehydrated skin include excess oil production throughout the day; usually two to three hours after cleansing. This occurs due to the fact that the skin is in need of water and will then compensate by producing excess oil. Skin consists of 70% water, should skin dehydrate, it will appear sallow, dull and oily. Texture tends to be coarse and skin is rather thick with deep wrinkles and has a rubbery feel to it.

One section of the skin's waterproof moisture barrier is slightly acidic and as such is know as the acid mantle. The acidity of this layer is due to secretions from the sebaceous and sweat glands and its function is once again protection but in particular stopping the growth of bacteria and fungi. It also assists with maintaining the "glue" that keeps the outer layer skin cells bound together.

To solve the problem of dehydration, you first need to know what is dehydration and causes of dehydration. The symptoms of dehydrated skin include flaky and blotchy patches, rough spots and dull skin tone. If your skin remains dehydrated for too long, keratinization may develop. Keratinization is the development of a rough quality in skin tissue.

Chlorine, cleansers, alcohols and other compounds are known to be drying. Some are actually used to dry excessive oils or sebum, which is not really a good choice. As the body senses the presence of dehydrated skin, it may produce even more sebum, if someone has an oilier complexion.

On the other hand, having dry skin is a sure warning of dehydration. Like oily skin, moisture is an important factor in combating dryness. Heat, in all forms, also affects the skin, thus, bathing in hot water and sauna baths only heighten dryness. Often, this makes your skin feel tight since it already lost its flexibility and elasticity. To treat it, moisturizing frequently especially after a cold or warm bath will surely help.
