Detoxification Myths, Facts and Falsehoods

Detoxification diets are as trendy as many fad diets. For the amount of information available about detoxification diets, there is also a lot of misinformation. The same initial concerns you would have about any new fad diet, should be addressed when beginning a new detox diet. For instance, your overall health, body size and age should be evaluated prior to starting any diet. Sadly, many people take on a detoxification diet with the false hope of curing a disease or for rapid weight loss.

Detoxification- it's not a miracle cure.

Disease and illnesses are all around us and it seems like they find a new on every week. It is not surprising people are reaching out for miracle cures and quick fixes. Detoxification helps prevent diseases and illness by reducing or eliminating contact with harsh chemicals and disease causing organisms introduced through our diet. Promoters of detoxification often make far reaching statements and claims that give people false hope when it comes to curing a disease process. While detoxing to maintain good health is a valid practice, using detoxification to cure a disease is a claim that is often met with disappointment on the buyer's part.

Detoxification for weight loss- Don't do it.

There is no quick fix for weight loss- period! Can a detoxification diet be part of a sensible weight loss plan? Of course they can. Healthful and sensible weight loss constitutes more than a detox diet. You need to eliminate junk carbohydrates and low quality proteins from your diet. Reduce or lower you beverages that contain sugar. Decrease your alcohol consumption as it is full of empty carbohydrates. Eat smaller portions and increase (or start) your daily exercise program. It is simple process of burning more calories than you are putting in. Reduce caloric intake and increase activity; this is the foundation of every successful diet plan.

Detox for Health!

If you use a detox diet for the right reasons you can clear your body of unwanted toxins while maintaining a healthful lifestyle. Would you spend an afternoon cleaning you're your car then turn around and shovel dirt into it? I am sure I can find one person to say yes, but most rational people would not. If you cleanse your body, then keep the junk out! Adopt the lifestyle change that will be necessary to maintain a healthy you.
Stick to the basics (good dietary control, increased activity level and a relaxed mind) and you will live well.
