Tramadol, a narcotic-like synthetic analgesic (pain reliever), is mainly used to treat moderate to severe pains. The exact mechanism of tramadol is still unknown, but it is guessed that it does the same work like morphine, it binds itself into opioid receptors located in the brain, these receptors are the ones responsible for transmitting sensations of pain through out the body.

This medication should not be taken by persons who may develop allergic reactions from tramadol. It is also not advisable to take in tramadol together with alcohol or street drugs, narcotic pain medicine, sedatives or tranquilizers (such as Valium), medicine for depression or anxiety, or medicine for mental illness (such as bipolar disorder, schizophrenia). There have been also some instances when seizures have occurred to people who have been taking tramadol, the risk of having seizures also increases when accompanied with certain health conditions like a history of drug or alcohol addiction, history of epilepsy or other seizure disorder,  history of head injury, metabolic disorder, and also if you are also taking an antidepressant, muscle relaxer, narcotic, anti psychotic, or medicine for nausea and vomiting. And if you have other health conditions like kidney disease (or if you are on dialysis), cirrhosis or other liver disease, a stomach disorder, or a history of depression, mental illness, or thoughts of suicide, it is recommended to have a discussion with your doctor about these conditions and how it might affect your tramadol medication. You may have to undergo several special tests before you can safely use tramadol.

The use of tramadol also entails suffering from some of its mild to serious side effects. Though generally, most of those who use tramadol tolerate the medication so well that they do not experience any problems at all. The less serious side effects of tramadol are also easily dealt with by your health care provider, and treatment may not be necessary at all since these mild side effects may just go away after stopping the medication for a period of time, these include: dizziness, spinning sensation; constipation, upset stomach; headache; drowsiness; or feeling nervous or anxious. However, there might be some rare cases when serious side effects come up, they include: agitation, hallucinations, fever, fast heart rate, overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of coordination, fainting; seizure (convulsions); a red, blistering, peeling skin rash; or shallow breathing, weak pulse. If any of the serious side effects occur, immediately seek medical attention. The same must also be done when allergic reactions occur which include: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
