Medication or no, your first response to angina should be to sit down and relax, says Dr. Ouyang. If you're having an arterial spasm, it will subside in a minute or two and release its grip on your artery. If clogged arteries are to blame, relief upon resting may suggest that whatever you were doing when the pain hit required more oxygen than your clogged arteries could deliver. Sitting down reduces the workload on your heart and should relieve the pain.
Angioplasty and stent placement is a common angina treatment strategy. Chronic stable angina is a form of chest pain that happens when your heart is working harder and needs more oxygen, such as during exercise. The pain goes away when you rest. Your narrowed arteries can be the cause of this form of angina.
Exercise is a proven stress releaser, And it will also help you lose weight. Both stress and overweight are counterproductive to a healthy heart It will also lower your heart rate and reduce your blood pressure, which, in turn, will help reduce your need for medication.
Honey is one of the best home remedies for angina. Few drops of honey mixed with warm water and half piece of lemon can be taken every morning in empty stomach. This clears the blood vessels and prevents formation of cholesterol inside. This mixture can also be taken before going to bed. Beet juice also serves as a good remedy in preventing angina.
As a hand cleanser it excels, just rub the hand with the skin of a lemon (squeeze the juice out first). As a special hand moisturizer, massage the hands for about 10 minutes as you watch television with a mix of Olive Oil and salt, this simple effective mix exfoliates and softens the hand so that they feels like silk -your hands would never have felt so soft and smooth.
Boil a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds and a cup and a half of water. Strain the soup and add two teaspoons of honey. Take this twice a day.
Calcium-channel blockers (for example, amlodipine, felodipine, diltiazem, nicardipine, nifedipine, verapamil) open up the coronary arteries improving the blood supply to the heart muscle. Some of them may also make the heart beat slower and with less force. This means that the heart needs less blood and oxygen after exercise, so angina is prevented or occurs less frequently.
Nitroglycerin is the most commonly used nitrate for angina. Nitroglycerin that dissolves under your tongue or between your cheeks and gum is used to relieve an angina episode. Nitroglycerin in the form of pills and skin patches is used to prevent attacks of angina. These forms of nitroglycerin act too slowly to relieve pain during an angina attack.
If you have severe angina that is not responding to medication, a cardiologist may decide you need surgery to restore heart function to an adequate level and reduce the likelihood of a heart attack.
Although physicians do not know everything about the causes of angina and atheroma (fatty deposits, or plaques, within the blood vessels), they do know enough to offer effective medical therapy. Such therapy will depend upon the results of exercise tolerance and other tests, the presence or absence of symptoms, and the individual's personal preferences.
