What is Acidity?
The stomach normally secretes acid that is essential in the digestive process. This acid helps in breaking down the food during digestion. When there is excess production of acid by the gastric glands of the stomach, it results in the condition known as acidity. Dyspepsia, heartburn and the formation of ulcers are some of the symptoms. It is more common in highly emotional and nervous individuals.
Natural Treatment for Acidity
Apple Cider Vinegar. It doesn't seem like it would work, but it works better than anything else. The acid of many acidic substances outside of the body actually become alkaline once they are ingested. It balances the acid in the stomach so that you don't have to produce too much of your own stomach acid to digest foods.
Make a fine powder of ginger powder, black pepper, dried mint leaves, asafetida (hing), anise seeds, coriander seeds, cumin, fennel and common salt taken equally. Take one teaspoon of this powder with water, twice a day after meals.
Include green leafy vegetables and sprouts in your diet. These contain vitamins B and E which aid digestion and also facilitate the elimination of acids from the body. ‘Raita’ prepared from cucumber and salads are a tried and trusted digestive aid.
Maintaining a standing posture for some time after food will help in preventing reaction.
1-2 teaspoon juice of chebulic myroblan is taken daily is highly beneficial in the treatment of acidity and heart burn. For better results the juice can be mixed with equal amount of amla juice.
Pour one cup of boiling water over a piece of ginger, tsp ground cloves and tsp cinnamon. Filter it, sweeten with honey and have it sip by sip. This helps when there is mucus in the cough.
Another good remedy is the usage of Jaggery (Gudh) after the meals. About 5 to 10 grams of a Jaggery piece taken after the meals helps in eliminating acidity, improves digestion and also helps in the expulsion of worms in small children.
Avoid foods such as chocolate, tomoto juices, peppermint, food or drinks containing caffeine, fried or fatty foods, carbonated drinks as these can worsen acidity problem.
Take a cardamom and a clove and powder it. Consume it like a mouth freshener after having your each meal. Not only this remedy will take care of your acidity problem, but also will keep away bad breath.
Boil one cup of water. To this add 1 tsp of Aniseed (Saunf). Cover and leave overnight. Strain the water in the morning, add 1 tsp of honey. When this is taken 3 times a day it prevents acidity.
Squeeze the juice of a whole orange and mix it with roasted cumin seeds. Add some rock salt as per your taste. This will give you an immediate relief from acidity.
Consumption of milk and milk product are good to relive these symptoms. Like wise taking cereals like wheat or its products also give symptomatic relief. Bananas have protective action against these conditions and are highly recommended in the diet. The alkaline ash present in banana correct the acidosis caused by acid forming diets. Maintaining an upright posture for some time after food will help in preventing reflex in to oesophagus. Like wise sleeping with shoulder elevated will also reduce symptoms due to regurgitation of acidic content to oesophagus.
