Foods high in fiber include whole grains such as oats, barley, brown rice, and whole wheat and less well-known grains such as quinoa, millet and triticale. Other fiber-rich foods include legumes (beans) and lentils; vegetables and fruits are also high in fiber.

Portion Control

Use portion control. This is defined by common measurements such as ounces, pieces or cups. Healthy diets for weight loss must include eating the correct serving sizes of individual foods in order to reap the greatest benefits. Eat smaller portions to lose more weight. The USDA and the American Heart Association state that a serving of lean protein is the size of a card deck. A serving of grains is one-half cup cooked, or one ice cream scoopful. One fruit serving of fresh fruit equals one cup, or the size of a tennis ball.

Your Plate

Divide your plate into portions. According to the USDA's Food Pyramid, one half of your plate will be nonstarchy fruits and vegetables. One quarter of your plate will contain lean protein (fish, poultry and low-fat dairy). The remaining quarter will be whole grains or starchy vegetables such as potatoes and corn.
