Historical background

The concept of therapy with warm-cold contrast was first experimented in Germany 150 years ago, when Reverend Sebastian Kneipp applied and confirmed the therapeutic values of water. His experiments were the first fruits of the concept of therapy with warm-cold contrast. Its action, based on alternation between warm and cold, stimulates the bloodstream and the nervous system while strengthening the immune system. Public steam baths are known to have been in use in the ancient city-state of Sparta, although public bathing, even in Europe, almost certainly predates this. Spartan bathers would remain in the steam until they were sweating profusely and then immediately plunge into an adjacent cold water pool to cool down again.

The use of steam baths spread, first throughout Greece, then later, westwards to Rome. The practice seems to have traveled also in a northerly direction, originating from early Greek settlements in the south of what is now the Ukraine and, thereafter, becoming widespread in much of the area which was, until recently, known as the Soviet Union. As a result, steam and vapour baths are often still referred to as Russian baths.

Before the concept of treatment and remedy, medicine was in the clutches of superstitions. If a person was inflicted with disease in those days it was thought that it was due to wrath and anger of gods and goddess, the poor person was ignored treatment not given and was left to die. If however the person some how recovered from his disease and became healthy it was thought in those days, that the person had defeated gods and goddess and was very powerful with craft was the only remedy and gods and goddesses were made happy and worshipped by in human sacrifices. After this period of darkness BUQRAT (Hippocrate) who was the first person to free medicine from the clutches of magic and superstition gave medicine a scientific footing.

It was BUQRAT only who said that disease had nothing to do with witchcraft or worshiping gods and goddesses of that time. He was of the opinion that a person suffering from any disease should be carefully observed signs and symptoms noted and treated and managed accordingly. This thinking of BUQRAT who was born in UNANI (Greece) changed the entire thinking of people and medicine became an important study and knowledge, and Greece became the center of learning and advancement. Philosophy, logic, metaphysics was studied and all branches of knowledge were viewed through the glass of philosophy.

Medical sciences and other science reached the zenith of its glory during this period. Book were written and translated into various languages and different countries of the world adopted this method regimental therapies were also incorporated. One of the major regimental therapy in treating disease was through special type of medicated bath known as HAMMAM where treatment through water was adopted and the people of turkey were the first to construct the concept of hammam which was named as TURKISH BATH. Hammam in Arabia were also built which were actually the copies of Turkish bath.
