How Magnesium Deficiency Affects You Worse in Warmer Climates

Research has shown that the food we eat do not provide the neccessary amounts of magnesium and the other essential minerals that are required for us to combat deficiency symptoms.

Sadly, most of us are deficient and we don't know it.  Farming practices have robbed the soil of the much needed nutrients that we require. Our diets have also become deficient of fresh vegetables, fruits and grains, the magnesium rich foods that our bodies need.

The body needs magnesium to perform at least three hundred jobs.

Among these functions are the maintenance of bone density, energy production and the conducting of energy in the heart.  Magnesium is also known as an electrolyte as it conducts electrical signals in the body.   As an electrolyte it functions in hormonal reactions, muscle contraction,  breakdown of fatty acids, glucose utilization, maintenance of ionic balance at a cellular base and protein synthesis.

Magnesium is one of the most commonly found minerals in the cells of the body, but yet it consists of only about 1% of this essential mineral.

This mineral affects the role of calcium in homeostasis and is mostly found in the soft tissues, muscles and bones of the human body. Magnesium deficiencies can cause severe symptoms, including incorrect cardiovascular function, high blood pressure, auditory sensitivity, anxiety, irritability, confusion, depression, insomnia, depression, cramps and muscle weakness. Low levels of magnesium can case cramps, nausea, and lack of endurance in active adults and athletes, particularly during exercise. Minerals such as magnesium, selenium, chromium and zinc are excreted in perspiration during exercise or whenever the metabolic rate is increased.  This process can interfere with important processes in the body.

High temperatures and humidity can also cause the amount of magnesium lost to be increased.

The amount of this mineral lost is of extreme concern to athletes during heavy training sessions. It was suggested by scientists that healthy long distance runners suddenly die of heart arrhytmias as a result of losing too much magnesium through perspiration and urination. Researchers have found that when there is a restriction in the amount of magnesium, the heart rate, peak oxygen uptake rate, and cumulative oxygen utilization all increased.  The increase was directly related to the extent of magnesium deficiency. All these issues are very dangerous to the health of an athlete and therefore the importance of magnesium cannot be overlooked by an athlete or trainer. Stamina and endurance is severely hampered by magnesium deficiency and this is why this mineral is essential to optimum sports nutrition. In addition to improving performance, magnesium relieves fatigue and speeds up recovery after injuries. An athlete relies on relaxation and optimal contraction of muscles as the foundation for performance. While calcium helps the muscles to contract properly, magnesium helps the muscles to relax after contraction. Certain medical professionals and sports nutritionists believe that hamstring injuries can be avoided to a great extent by adequate magnesium intake. It is said that hamstrings are shortened due to a lack of magnesium. Eating foods that are rich in magnesium is the first step to combatting magnesium deficiency. The more active a person is, the more magnesium he or she needs. Athletes need a lot more magnesium than an average person with a more sedentary lifestyle. Some nutritional companies offer hair analysis to determine the levels of minerals and whether magnesium deficiency is present. Liquid mineral supplements are very useful in combatting this condition.
