How to Control High Blood Pressure-Introduction

Heart is the most precious organ in human body that works continuously and without its proper functioning it is impossible to remain alive. It pumps blood to the whole body through a complex system of arteries, veins, and capillaries. When high cholesterol level and fat build up clogs the blood vessels, heart has to double its efforts to pump blood to body parts. This is the reason behind hypertension. Due to this excess work heart becomes enlarged and other physical disorders initiate.

The recognized acceptable limits of normal blood pressure as measured on sphygmomanometer should be 120/80. The upper limit is an indicator of when heart pumps blood and the lower limit is the when heart contracts to receive blood back. The processes of pumping and contraction are called systolic pressure and diastolic pressure respectively.

For a hypertensive person who is diabetic as well obesity, smoking, and alcohol means increased risk of heart failure or heart attack.

Useful Tips on How to Control High Blood Pressure

Control with exercise: Studies show that lifestyle of an average human today is too inactive and this is a major reason for people to be hypertensive. Nitric oxide is a substance that is produced naturally and is helpful in keeping the blood vessels open and exercising is a catalyst to the production of nitric oxide. When high cholesterol and fats obstruct smooth blood flow, physical exercise makes blood push its way through blood vessels precipitating release of nitric oxide. Additionally, a low fat diet also helps to keep cholesterol level checked.

Control with salt: Sodium is a confirmed culprit behind elevated blood pressure. Research has confirmed that people with higher salt consumption are sure to become hypertensive. Requirement of human body is no more than 500 mg of salt whereas average human intake of salt is 7 grams. It is advisable to use salt substitutes to be on the safe side.

No smoking and no alcohol: Nicotine is a highly addictive chemical and its impact on blood vessels is hard. It causes a constriction of blood vessels thus impeding blood flow and a rise in blood pressure. Likewise alcohol interferes with smooth flowing of blood. Health experts say that for a regular drinker and smoker, it is extremely difficult to control hypertension. Risk of heart complication increases with such bad habits.

Adopt a healthy lifestyle: Desk jobs and increased use of computers in our daily life has pinned humans to chair. This physical inactivity is inviting physical problems and hypertension is one them. Man of today is too machine dependant. A split from television and computer screen to some physical activity is a necessity of today.
