Heat stroke is the condition that happens when the body creates or takes in more heat then it can let out. Generally this condition is due to excessive exposure to a heat that the body cannot tolerate. Our body is equipped with heat-regulating mechanisms, that are constantly trying to regulate the temperature of our body. When these mechanisms are over-worked for an extended period of time, they become unable to effectively regulate our temperature, which makes our body temperature climb uncontrollably.

Heat Stroke is a medical emergency, and the most severe form of heat related illness. Anyone exhibiting the signs and symptoms of Heat Stroke should be rushed to the nearest hospital or clinic. Unlike other forms of heat illness, Heat Stroke does not have to be caused by exercise or exertion. High temperatures, lack of body fluids and overexposure to the elements can all bring about Heat Stroke. The very young and old are especially susceptible to the hazards of this heat related illness.

Heat exhaustion occurs when your body gets too hot. The body's core temperature is controlled by the hypothalamus, the part of the brain that also controls thirst and hunger. Normally, the body gets rid of excess heat by sweating. But if you are exposed to high temperatures (working outdoors in the summer, for example) for a long time and don't replace the fluids you lose, the body systems that regulate temperature become overwhelmed. As a result, your body produces more heat than it can dissipate.

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 911/emergency medical services right away. Remove the child’s clothing and any sports equipment. Begin cooling the child by any means available, including immersing him in cold water, spraying him with cold water, fans, or ice bags. Monitor the child’s body temperature. Do not give the child anything to drink. If emergency services do not arrive quickly, call again for instructions.

But most people who die from heat stroke in the U.S. -- about 400 every year, and possibly more -- don't get it from overexerting themselves on a muggy day. In certain people during high temperatures, it's all too easy to develop heat stroke while sitting perfectly still on the couch. Heat stroke occurs when the body is unable to regulate its temperature. The body's temperature rises rapidly, the sweating mechanism fails, and the body is unable to cool down.

The Facts on Heat Stroke

Heat stroke is also known as sunstroke, thermic fever, or siriasis. It happens when the body's mechanisms for controlling temperature fail. Heat stroke is a life-threatening emergency needing immediate treatment. While many people feel sick and faint during heat waves, most of these people are suffering from heat exhaustion, a related condition usually less serious than heat stroke.

How to Prevent Heat-Related Illness

Be aware of the warning signs of heat-related illness, such as light-headedness, mild nausea or confusion, sleepiness or profuse sweating.

While outdoors, rest frequently in a shady area so that your body's thermostat has a chance to recover.

Schedule outdoor activities carefully, preferably before noon or in the evening,
