How to Remove Chicken Skin on Underarms

Do you have an eruption of red bumps on your underarms, making your skin appear like Chicken skin?  Are these red bumps more or less permanent,  becoming more pronounced during the cold season, when the skin on the whole becomes more dry?

Don't Worry : You can get rid of Chicken Skin on Your underarms naturally at home.

Well, if that is so, you have a skin condition called Keratosis Pilaris or Chicken Skin or KP.     But do not be alarmed by the big name – fortunately, it is a totally harmless condition and can be reduced considerably, with medication.

KP results from a blockage of skin pores by excess keratin or skin cell protein and is generally hereditary.  The excess keratin hardens in the pores and immediately under the outermost layer of the skin, causing the blood vessels there to dilate and become red in colour,  disfiguring the skin affected by it.

The condition is categorized by the degree of redness and part of the body affected by it.

The underarms can be more susceptible,  since they are often treated with deodorants, which tend to dry the skin.

Treatment of this condition requires exfoliation of the skin, combined with reduction of the inflammation.  This is generally brought about by applying lotions and moisturizing creams readily available in the market.  Recommended brands are Retin-A, Aristocort and a combination of benzoyl peroxide and Adapalene.  Retin-A is a Vitamin A acid, and functions as an exfoliant and can be applied on the underarms very gently.   While it is effective, in that the original condition takes a long time to return if untreated,    it is slow to bring about results, and also, it is expensive.      Thus, the more popular creams are the other two mentioned above,  both of which act as anti-inflamatory agents as well.

Certain soaps containing sulfur compounds, a also lotions wherein sulfur is a component, are good alternatives for treating KP on the underarms.   Urea is also useful in this area.

Home remedies are also available for treating KP on the underarms.  A paste made of granulated sugar and milk or curd or sour cream, when applied gently over the affected area, can considerably reduce the inflammation, by the action of the lactic acid which acts as an exfoliant, thus reducing chances of clogging of the pores by the excess keratin.

Application of Vitamin E oil, or cocoanut oil also brings about similar results.

Rubbing or scratching however is to be totally avoided in these areas in spite of the inclination to do so,  since this would aggravate the condition.
