Huqna (enema): a regime in unani system of medicine

Definition

This is the treatment in which medicated enemas are given. This is not just to clean the large intestine but also to avail different benefits. It allays pain and inflammation of kidneys and bladder and relieves various types of colic. It also to eliminate morbid matters from the upper vital organs, activated enemata however, weaken the liver and produce fever. Sometimes, the enema is necessary for removing matter left behind by a previous eliminant.

Types of Enema in Unani

  1. 1. Huqna Dawaiya

1)      Huqna Mushihal

2)      Huqna Qavja

3)      Huqna

  1. 2. Huqna Gizaiya

Others types of Enema:

  1. 1. Evacuant Enema

Warm water enema, Enema Sapiens, Glycerin enema, Alive oil enema and Castor oil enema

  1. 2. Retention Enema

Starch opium enema, Normal saline enema, Astringent enema, Medicinal enema, Barium enema, Nutrients enema and MgSO4 enema

Objectives

  1. Excretion of the Gair-e tabai fuzlat
  2. Should be not heat and cold
  3. 3. Change of mizaz i.e. abb-e neloofar, abb-e kaddu
  4. 4. Taehleel-e rhea
  5. Control of ishal
  6. Control of pain in abdomine

Procedure

Enema is best given in the supine position. Afterwards the patient is turned to the affected side. The best time for giving an enema is the relatively cool hours of the morning or evening when there is less distress, disturbance and fainting. A bath taken before the enema is bad in principle. While the enema withdraws stagnant humors, a bath would disperse humors and is thus, of no use.

Roghan-e bedanjeer (Castor oil)

Sabun (Soap)

Namak (Salt)

Roghan-e badam (Almond oil)

Loabat (Mucilages)

Nuskha-1 : Sabun 3gm, Roghan-e jatoon, Roghan-e bead e anjeer 3 tola

Nuskha-2 : Gul-e banafsha, Gul-e khatmee,  Laboos gandam

Nuskha-3: for taghziya, Abb-e anar, Abb-e angoor,  Mao- shayee, jo ka pani

Nuskha-4: Sabun 2gm,  Arq-e Gulab 250 gm

Nuskha-5: for sarshamee bukhar,Unnab 1 tola, Sapistan 1 tola, Gul-e banafsha 1 tola, Gul-e khatmee 1 tola, R- badam 11gm

Signs / symptoms of enema

a) Optimum effects / proper enema

  1. Feeling of lightness in the body
  2. Increased digestive capacity
  3. the strength increases gradually
  4. Gradually relined of the symptoms of the disease

b) Improper effects

  1. Giddiness
  2. Weakness
  3. Hiccoup
  4. Nausea
  5. Dyspnoea
  6. Pain in heal

Indication

Constipation, Loss of strength, Obstruction of urine, stool, semen, Loss of muscle tissue, Excess loss of semen, Abdominal distention due to flatulence, Worm infestation, Pain in joints, Fistula-in ano, Disease of spleen, Angina pectoris, Pain in sides of chest, Convulsions, Amenorrhoea, Impaired appetite, Osteoarthritis,  Haemorrhoids, Stiffness, Facial palsy, Paraplegia, Gonorrhoea, Gout, UTI and Urinary calculi

Contraindication

Indigestion, Unctiuosness in excess, Hungry, Thirsty, After emesis, Purgation, Intestinal obstruction
