Info on Sinus Problems Surgery

Do you think you might need surgery to beat your sinus woes? Although these kinds of surgical treatments are usually safe and easy, you should know that no surgery is without risk and sacrifice. To help your decision out, here's some more information on sinus problems surgery.

What is It?

Basically it is a surgical procedure to relieve you of your constant flare ups. The usual cause of these flare-ups would have something to do with blockages of the narrow passages that connect the sinuses to the nose. These passages serve as drainage ducts to clear up dirt and mucosal secretions. If they get blocked all that dirt and mucus gets trapped and starts to cause problems.

When is It Used?

It is important to note that this kind of procedure is not required in most cases of sinusitis. The usual cases caused by allergies and infections are treatable by meds and other practical solutions like rest and hydration. However, there are certain cases where the problems are due to structural abnormalities. Structural abnormalities in the nose mean you have a differently shaped nose. This could be due to the growth of polyps, abnormally narrow passages, or even a deviated nasal septum.

What Does it Entail?

Since you are trying to deal with the mucus drainage system of the body, most of the surgeries would try to either remove the blockage or help out the drainage system. Procedures like the removal of growths and polyps and the repair of the deviated nasal septum is likely if you suffer from these. Particularly narrow passages can be helped along by widening the openings or making new ones.

Different procedures may be used, depending on your condition. It is important that you actually know what the condition is before making any surgical decisions. If your case isn't as severe, less invasive and less intense surgical procedures like the FESS or functional endoscopic sinus surgery may be used. If you need extra drainage paths for your mucus, a Caldwell Luc procedure may be called for. A Caldwell Luc goes in through your top molar to create a new connection between the nose and the sinuses in the cheeks.

What are the Risks?

Although generally safe, any sinus problems surgery does entail some risk. The usual risks come from the use of anesthetic and the procedure itself.

Some people just react negatively to the use of anesthetics. Sometimes, reactions like vomiting, nausea, sore throat, headaches, and even urinary retention result as side-effects from the anesthetic used. Talk to your doctor about these before going through the procedure.

The procedure itself, although usually less invasive than other surgical procedures, can still result in further complications. For example, bleeding and infections can result from a routine procedure. Since the nasal passages are sometimes close to the brain and the cranium, sometimes the procedure can cause leaks in the skull. These can compromise the brain itself and the fluid and membrane that surround it. This can result in meningitis, bleeding in the brain, stroke, and even death! These are very rare though you may want to talk to your doctor about these before making any decisions.

It is also very important to know that your woes can return even with surgery. Growths like polyps are known to re-grow after sometime. This is another important factor you have to consider before making any decisions.
