Mastoiditis is an infection of the spaces within the mastoid bone. It is almost always associated with otitis media, an infection of the middle ear. In the most serious cases, the bone itself becomes infected. It may spread into small cavities in the bone, blocking their drainage. Very severe cases infect the whole middle ear cleft.
Mastoiditis is a bacterial infection and inflammation of the air cells of the mastoid antrum. Although the prognosis is good with early treatment, possible complications include meningitis, facial paralysis, brain abscess, and suppurative labyrinthitis.
Mastoiditis is generally occurred by untreated middle ear infection and used to be a leading cause of death in children.Mastoiditis can be a small infection or can develop into life threatening complications. With the development of antibiotics ,it is a relatively uncommon and much less dangerous symptom. It is cured with medications and/or surgery. If untreated, the infection can moved to surrounding regions, including the brain , producing serious symptoms .
Haemophilus influenzae & Streptococcus pneumoniae are those kinds of bacteria which cause middle ear infections & produced mastoiditis. There are other bacteria as well such as Pseuodomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Fusobacterium, Klebsiella , Escherichia coli , Proteus, Prevotella,Porphyromonas , and Bacteroides. The procession of an uncured, or undertreated, middle ear infection may result mastoiditis.
Mastoiditis is usually a consequence of a middle ear infection (acute otitis media). The infection may spread from the ear to the mastoid bone of the skull. The mastoid bone fills with infected materials and its honeycomb-like structure may deteriorate. Mastoiditis most commonly affects children. Before antibiotics, mastoiditis was one of the leading causes of death in children. Now it is a relatively uncommon and much less dangerous disorder.
Mastoiditis is a bacterial infection of the mastoid air cells typically following acute otitis media. Symptoms include redness, tenderness, swelling, and fluctuation over the mastoid process, with displacement of the pinna. Diagnosis is clinical. Treatment is with antibiotics, such as ceftriaxone, and sometimes mastoidectomy.
Treatment is with intravenous antibiotics. A sample of ear discharge is examined to identify the organism causing the infection and to determine the antibiotics most likely to eliminate the bacteria. Antibiotics may be given by mouth once the person starts to recover and are continued for at least 2 weeks. If an abscess has formed in the bone, surgical drainage (mastoidectomy) is required.

Tympanometry, a test that can be performed in most physician offices to help determine how the middle ear is functioning. It does not tell if the child is hearing or not, but helps to detect any changes in pressure in the middle ear. This is a difficult test to perform in younger children because the child needs to sit very still and not be crying, talking, or moving.
