Interesting Facts About ADHD - Check These To Help You Choose The Right Treatment For Your Child

Posted: Feb 07, 2011 |

Did you know that one of the most interesting facts about ADHD is that over 70% of adults with ADHD get divorced? The reason is that the forgetfulness, distraction, inattention and the multitasking put such a strain on the relationship that many couples just give up and separate. This is a problem because the fact is that very often ADHD in childhood is not properly treated and carried into adulthood. The effects on adult life, not only on relationships, but also in the workplace are often disastrous.

Here is another one of those interesting facts about ADHD. Nobody knows exactly how the psychostimulant drugs such as Ritalin and Concerta actually work on the brain. We know that they do relieve some of the symptoms of hyperactivity and inattentiveness but that is as far as it goes. In addition, there are no long term studies either on what effects these drugs have on the developing brain in a child.

Interesting facts about ADHD abound but they all point in one direction. Nobody knows exactly why ADHD occurs in some children and no pharmaceutical company has produced a drug which can actually cure this condition. They have not even produced a drug which can improve or even treat the condition properly. Latest research by Dr. William Pelham from the University of Florida shows that the effects of these drugs tend to wear off after about three years. The result is that the child is no better off from the behavioral point of view.

When we look at these interesting facts about ADHD, we begin to see a pattern. Treatment of ADHD with psychostimulant drugs such as Ritalin alone is not the answer. When we investigate further we can see that the major health authorities such as the CDC and the American Academy of Pediatrics are strongly recommending that behavior modification must not be neglected and must be a cornerstone of any treatment program.

For far too long, ADHD advice has been limited to simply taking a few pills. The side effects have affected at least 30% of those children negatively and they are still floundering around with behavioral problems. These can range from sleep problems to loss of appetite and also some problems with drowsiness during the day. Parents tear their hair out trying to get the dosage amounts and timings right and the child is still unhappy.

Why not confront the real issues and look at treatments that actually work and are effective and safe for your child. Your family life will be transformed.
