Looking At The Causes Of ADHD And Safer Treatment Options

Posted: Mar 10, 2011 |

The causes of ADHD have occupied many experts up to now. The results are that there is no one main cause although there are a number of major factors that come into play.

The first one of the main causes of ADHD is that there seems to be a malfunctioning of some areas of the brain which are connected with our ability to make decisions, pay attention and concentrate.

There is a definite connection in that some of the areas around the frontal area of the brain are defective and the brain chemicals such as adrenaline, norepinephrine and dopamine are all involved.  They are making faulty connections and that means the message is just not getting through.

The areas of the brain lighting up on brain scans, illustrates this very clearly. Dr Daniel Amen has done extensive work on this and is convinccd that every child who has ADHD should really have a brain scan. The costs and the operating difficulties of doing this are enormous but it would resolve a lot of the treatment options, according to Dr.Amen. In fact, Dr. Amen has identified six subtypes of ADHD, to prove his point.

Of all the causes of ADHD, the genetic one has been the subject of much research and here there are some diverging opinions.  But the genetic link is definitely there as it does run in families. If you have a child with ADHD, you are four to five times more likely to have it yourself. This has been revealed when many parents have themselves diagnosed when they take along their children. They have had it all the time and it has gone untreated and probably caused them much suffering and problems in their social and working life.

After looking at the possible causes of ADHD, we need to consider what are the ways of treating it. There is no cure for this mental disorder and certainly medication is not the entire answer. It is only one small part of the equation really but has been hyped to the skies by the pharmaceutical companies as being the answer to all our prayers. There are many problems associated with medication, too numerous to mention here.

Looking at behavior modification as the central plank of any treatment program is key to understanding what exactly is going on here. The child needs to be able to cope with any behavior problems which can range from inattention to downright defiance and disobedience. No pills can ever teach him or her to take responsibility and then be accountable for their actions. It is as simple as that and yet many doctors have failed to realize the importance of this as the central part of any treatment program.

They are probably ignorant about this or have failed to see how important this is. Once we have this in place, all the attention, distraction and hyperactivity can be kept under control and we are teaching our children vital life skills. Why not discover what this involves and how a homeopathic remedy is the perfect accompaniment instead of worrying too much about the causes of ADHD.

There has been a lot of controversy about the ADHD main cause and it is certainly true to say that diet has got nothing to do with the actual cause. Neither has bad parenting nor sugary cereals and snacks! These are not the causes at all although they certainly have an effect on how treatment is administered in the home and can be a decisive factor in alleviating symptoms.
