Natural Herbal Remedies And Their Growing Popularity

Posted: Feb 01, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Natural herbal supplements can really help you to maintain a healthy body and mind and support your general health, well-being, fitness and vitality. In some cases they can even provide an effective alternative to medicine to treat the symptoms and perhaps even the root cause of your malady.

Natural herbal supplements are available for just about any common ailment you care to think of. Natural herbs can be used to lower blood pressure, lower cholesterol and regulate the ratio of good to bad forms of cholesterol. Medicinal herbs are even used to regulate and control the effects of menopause, reduce depression and anxiety, and even mild to moderate aches and pains such as headache, toothache and muscle ache.

Herbal supplements have unique healing properties that aren't just for illnesses. You can use them to help reduce stress, improve memory, aid digestion, and to strengthen the immune system. There are also herbal remedies and supplements that can help control weight, increase muscle-bulk and stamina, slow or even reverse baldness, and improve sexual function, to name just a few.

One of the problems with there being so many fads of late is that one herb may be hailed (and of course aggressively marketed) as being the new miracle-cure-wonder-drug for some specific health condition – usually one that has just been in the news. What's often left unsaid – at least by marketers - is all the other things these herbs will do too. Most herbs can be and are used effectively for a variety of purposes, and have different effects on different parts of your body.

Unlike prescription medications which are made to treat just one thing, many herbs can be used to treat a wide variety of things. Over the past few years, more and more people in the Western world have been turning to alternative medicine to provide relief from diseases and ailments that mainstream medicine seems unable to alleviate, or simply through a desire to re-discover the ancient remedies that have been used around the world for centuries.

The success of natural remedies stems from their effectiveness and relative safety (no or extremely limited side effects). In fact, many natural herbal remedies have shown impressive results in clinical trials, particularly those commonly used against arthritis, heart disease and prostate inflammation – to name just a few.

The first thing to understand is what natural herbal remedies are and how they work. Usually this term refers to the use of medicinal plants that either aid in healing an ailment or that are used to prevent one, or used to promote general health and welllbeing. A very good example is the succulent Hoodia gordonii, whose extract is an effective appetite suppressant used to control weight and aid with weight-loss.

Although herbal medicine is of course the oldest healing method (archaeological evidence shows that our ancestors have been using herbal treatments for over a hundred thousand years - possibly much longer), it is often referred to as alternative or complementary medicine today.

The therapeutic effects of natural medicine are due to the action of chemical compounds that occur naturally in the different organs of the plants: leaves, fruit, flowers, roots, etc.
