Niacin And ADHD - Making Smart Choices In ADHD Treatment Which Really Get You Results

Have you seen the NADH supplements in all the health stores recently? If you have, then you will have seen their claims that this is really the thing to help with efficient brain function and therefore could be a great help in aiding attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) patients, including children. Actually the NADH acronym stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide or Niacin. So is Niacin and ADHD an effective treatment option?

I was very interested to read the Alternative Medicine Review recently which published a remarkable paper on the whole question of using vitamins and minerals which might be useful in providing relief for some of the classic ADHD symptoms such as hyperactivity, poor attention span and impulsivity. It claimed that these essential vitamins and minerals were just as effective in controlling ADHD symptoms as the ADHD medications such as Ritalin, Adderall and Vyvanse

It showed that Niacin which is also known as Vitamin B3 is an important player in the whole Vitamin B team. Many more studies would be needed to show that Niacin and ADHD were a winning combination and I have yet to see anything which makes that claim and which is backed up by solid research.

But the research does show us that having a diet rich in Vitamin B, including Niacin is probably the way to go as they have been shown to aid brain function and that has attracted the attention of doctors who are dealing with Alzheimers' patients as well.

Vitamin B plays an essential role in converting the carbohydrates into simple sugars which help to keep our brains alert. We can get plenty of simple sugars by having lots of snacks but it is Vitamin B and Niacin in particular which can help us to prolong this process and provide a steadier supply of glucose and thereby avoid a sugar crash. That type of crash often causes ADHD children to have mood swings and temper tantrums and other outbursts.

Vitamin B can also help the brain transmitters such as serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine to function better. That means less impulsiveness, distractability and calmer behavior all round.

If we make sure that there is plenty of Vitamin B in our children's diets, then we are helping them to overcome their ADHD in the healthiest possible way. Green leafy vegetables, brown rice, legumes, meat, potatoes and peanuts are all valuable sources of Vitamin B including Niacin. While the ADHD Niacin connection may be somewhat tenuous, the healthy diet with a complete range of Vitamin B is certainly not.

As regards alternatives to medication with psychostimulants, we should actively promote homeopathic remedies because they are free of side effects and pose no health hazard at all. If you really want the best for your child, is it not time to make a smarter choice to give your child a much better chance in life?

These are the main stakeholders in the game and they all can play a vital role.
