Reduce Gout Attacks By Eating A Low Purine Diet

Posted: Jan 29, 2011 |Comments: 0 |

One of the best ways to manage gout is to follow a low purine diet. Through proper dieting you can reduce the frequency and duration of gout attacks. Gout is brought on by high uric acid levels in the blood. Uric acid is formed by the body metabolizing purines in the foods you eat. Since purines in foods are converted into uric acid, the best way to lower your uric acid levels is to reduce the amount of purines you consume.

Purines are found in all foods that contain protein. In fact the body actually needs purines to maintain good health. The problem kicks in when you body produces more uric acid than your body can use or eliminate properly through the kidneys. The trick is to reduce the amount of purines in your diet to the point that your body can handle them without bringing on a gout attack.

The prime suspects that should be eliminated from your diet entirely if possible are all organ meats. These contain some of the highest levels of purines. OK, I hear you. So you like chicken livers or beef liver. Eat them in very small portions and infrequently. If your gout stays at bay, that's great! If not, it's something you may just have to eliminate from your diet if you don't want to suffer the extreme pain of gout.

The amount of purines your body can tolerate is dependent on many factors, including what other methods you are using to manage your gout. You will need to experiment for a little while to find the maximum amount of purines you can consume each day without bringing on a gout attack.

Once you start following a low purine diet you will still find that certain foods trigger a gout attack no matter how little you eat of them. These particular trigger foods are going to need to be managed very carefully.

You may find that you can consume more purines if you are using other methods to manage your gout like taking black cherry juice concentrate, apple cider vinegar,  or even simply drinking fat free milk on a daily basis. Take some time and research other methods to manage your gout along with following a low purine diet. You will be glad you did.

Remember how mom always told you to eat your fruits and vegetables? Well she was right as usual. A diet high in fruits and vegetables with a reasonable amount of healthy fats and proteins works wonders for optimum health and is naturally low in purines.

Following a low purine diet for gout management does not mean eliminating all your favorite purine rich foods. It just means you have to manage your diet reasonably and effectively, for reducing your gout attack frequencies and lengths.

It has been shown, through research, that foods high in uric acid (purines) have contributed to the chance of developing gout or aggravating the symptoms if you already have the disease. Gout can be easy to manage if you are willing to make some considerable changes and sacrifices in your diet. This means avoiding foods high in uric acid. A healthy lifestyle along with these diet changes will help to control your gout (if you already have it) or prevent the disease (if you are at high risk).
