Sperm Count: Of the millions of sperm those get ejaculated, only about 200 manage to achieve the egg (ovum) in the woman's fallopian tube and only one really impregnates the egg. Low sperm count is also known as oligospermia occurs when sperm count is less than the 20 million sperm per milliliter of semen. Other than the sperm count, sperm quality and motility are equally important in male fertility.
Sperm Quality: In order for conception to occur and at least 60% of the sperm should be of a normal morphology (shape and structure). Normal sperm those have an oval head and a long tail. Sperm with a misshapen heads or curled tails or double tails have a lower chance of fertilizing the egg.
Sperm Motility: The sperm's tail propels just it forward. Sperm also should have the ability to move and swim in to order to reach the egg. The chances of fertilization are much greater if at least 50% of the sperm have motility (forward movement).
Causes of Low Sperm Count and Quality
• Stress: Emotional stress and other psychological issues can widely lead to low sperm count
• Heat exposure: Hot baths, saunas, high work temperatures, tight clothing, even using laptops, fever - all cause testicular overheating which leads to lower sperm count and its quality.
• Cycling: Exercises such as the bicycling can raise scrotal temperature and also cause genital numbness
• Alcohol abuse: Alcohol lowers fertility
• Smoking : Smoking or chewing tobacco can Marjory cause abnormal sperm morphology. It can also damage the sperm's DNA and cause fetal defects.
• Lubricants:Use of lubricants during intercourse can also affect sperm motility.
• Recreational drugsMarijuana, cocaine and opium can adversely affect sperm count and quality in addition to causing erectile dysfunction
Ways to increase sperm count and quality
• Avoid prolonged use of laptops, hot baths, tight fitting underpants, bicycling and any activity that can raise scrotal temperatures.
• Avoid alcohol, tobacco and other drug abuse.
• Avoid lubricants.
• Avoid using toxic chemicals those including household cleaning products or by use of protective clothing, proper ventilation and face masks.
• Reduce stress by doing meditation and relaxation.
• Exercise adequately.
• Maintain normal healthy body weight.
• Try herbal supplements and vitamins
