When stools are loose and without consistency, the condition is termed as diarrhea. It is useful to get rid of undesirable substances in a limited way. If the condition worsens with additional symptoms like vomiting, fever and stomach pain immediate medical attention is required. Children and people above 65 years of age are likely to suffer from it. Diarrhea causes severe loss of fluids which needs to be replenished. Diarrhea is caused by food poisoning, bacteria in food or water, food allergies or virus. If blood or mucus is found in the blood, parasital infection is confirmed. There are several home remedies for Diarrhea which are being successfully used in controlling it and are worth using them.

Bacterial & Viral Infection: This is considered as one of the main causes of diarrhea. Bacterial & viral infection caused via various means such as consumption of contaminated food or drinking water cause diarrhea. This is common mainly in developing countries where separation of drinking and sewage water is a big problem.

Diarrhea caused by few types of bacteria can also kill the patient if no proper medication is made available. Bacteria like E-coli, Campylobacter, Salmonella, lamblia etc. and virus like Rota-virus; herpes etc. are few names in the list.

The other reason of diarrhea is through infection, in case if the patient is suffering from other diseases, especially diseases which are related to intestinal infection.

Diarrhea is experienced by patients who are suffering from serious diseases like AIDS, dysentery, Crohn's disease, inflammatory bowel diseases such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome, cholera, bowel cancer, Ischemic bowel disease, some cases of appendicitis etc.

Body's negative response to some elements: If your body shows negative response to some food material, then consuming it might cause you problems like diarrhea.

One of the examples is consumption of milk. It has been witnessed that digestive systems of many people cannot process and digest lactose and other elemens available in milk leading to diarrhea. The best advise to those people would be to avoid consumption of any such thing.

Laxatives & other chemicals: Laxatives like magnesium (Epsom salt), phenolphthalein, cascara etc. that are used in day to day lives and also some chemicals which are part of our food, can cause diarrhea in some people.

Medicines: Certain type of medicines (including antibiotics and other drugs) cause diarrhea in patients. You should be very careful while using any new drug. If you witness a sudden problem with your bowel habits after you have started the medication that your physician suggested you, then you should stop taking medicines and contact your physician at the earliest.

Excessive consumption of alcohol: Excessive alcohol consumption can also cause diarrhea in patients. Generally excessive alcohol consumption causes chronic diarrhea, in which the body's ability to absorb ample amount of water gets affected.

Diarrhea can be classified in following two types:


Acute Diarrhea: Type of diarrhea that lasts for less than 3-4 weeks. This type of diarrhea is generally cured with normal treatment and does not need any intensive medication.

Chronic Diarrhea: Sometimes, diarrhea lasts really long and can extend from few months to a couple of years. This type of diarrhea is mainly caused due to some type of infection. In this type of diarrhea, the patient does not experience significant/intensive illness. Poor digestion (i.e. mal-absorption) of food, serious diseases like inflammatory bowel syndrome, irritable bowel syndrome, bowel cancer, prolonged alcohol consumption and effect of abnormalities are few other causes of chronic diarrhea.

Home Remedies for Diarrhea

Herbs are useful in preparing home remedies for diarrhea with the following examples serving as an indication for them. Chopped Basil Leaves, a pinch of salt and black pepper added to curd acts as an effective home remedy for Diarrhea. A mix of mint juice, honey and ginger juice is extremely useful. A few drops of Pudin Hara mixed with water can be taken as a dehydrant and helps in prevention of loss of body fluids.

A mix of lemon juice, ginger juice and pepper powder prepared in a table spoon can be taken to improve the condition. Wild oregano oil can be used as an anti bacterial, anti parasitic and anti viral and effective in treating these symptoms. Ginger tea acts as a pain reliever. Ginger ale makes the stools less watery. Charcoal can be used to prevent vomiting, nausea and intestinal bloating. It can be used for detoxifying liver and kidneys. Coriander seeds should be boiled in water. After straining out the seeds, the liquid can be consumed to stop dehydration.

Sugar and Salt added in small quantities in the ratio 2:1 to a cup of water can be given regularly to quench the thirst and helps in replenishing the body fluids. Water and Brown Rice should be boiled till the rice is cooked. The water should not be thrown away, instead it should be taken as a supplement for effective control of Diarrhea and the rice should be eaten for the vitamin B content. Grated Papaya boiled in water for ten minutes water strained out and consumed can act well for Diarrhea.

A lemon ground well and a paste made with the addition of salt can be taken as an effective instrument to counter Diarrhea. Amaranth seeds and leaves are useful in Diarrhea. You can make a decoction by boiling the amaranth seeds in water and allowing it to steep for half an hour. Two cups of this decoction can mitigate the symptoms. Grape fruit seed extract is an excellent remedy for traveler's Diarrhea. Fresh pomegranate skin soaked in water, heated till the volume becomes ¼ th can be taken as a liquid several times of the day for improvement. Honey can also be added to this to treat blood in the stool. A paste from Goat's milk and Sesame seeds is also extremely useful and one of the many home remedy for Diarrhea.

Diet for Diarrhea and Prevention

Brown Rice, ripe Bananas, Apple sauce and toast can be given as a diet during Diarrhea. Toast should have whole wheat and butter or jam should not be added. Apple juice should be avoided as it increases Diarrhea intensity. Liquids should be given frequently to compensate the water loss. Dairy products should be avoided. Fruit juices, Apricots, Peas, Pears and Plums should be avoided. Buttermilk, Yoghurt, Banana and Carrot can be given. Physical activity should be completely curtailed. This is one of the important diet for diarrhea and effective diarrhea cure.

All the above diarrhea treatment work well for most of the cases, but if the situation aggravates with other symptoms surfacing, medical attention should be immediately sought.
