Tart Cherry a Herb for Good Health

There are only a few instances in the ancient historical record concerning cherry trees. This absence in the record perhaps resulted in the fragile nature and perishability of the fruit, unlike the fruit from the apple tree. There are strong suggestions that the cherry tree originated in the territories of Asia Minor near the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. The genus Prunus, to which the cherries, plums, almonds, apricots and peaches belong, includes around 430 species spread over much of the northern temperate regions and has a toehold in South America. Although including a few evergreen species, such as the well-known cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus), the genus is mainly deciduous and generally hardy to the frosts likely to occur in most New Zealand gardens. 

According to research, the tart cherry generally has a higher concentration of pain fighting antioxidants like anthocyanins and phenolics. This means the tart cherry has more anti-inflammatory fighting ability than the sweet cherry. For example, Anthocyanins are natural Cox-1 and Cox-2 inhibitors. The Anthocyanins found in cherries also inhibit the cyclooxygenase-1 and -2 enzymes. These are the same enzymes targeted by many of the anti-inflammatory drugs. Additional encouraging news about the tart cherry comes from Dr. Russell Reiter from the University of Texas. 

Cherries are a natural source of naturally occurring antioxidants and phenolics including melatonin, potassium, anthocyanins and more. These compounds work together in a synergistic way to provide the natural health benefits of this red fruit. The tart cherry has a long history of fight joint pain naturally and lowering uric acid in the body.
