While going for a surgery there is less chance for any post-surgery complications like bleeding or blockage. If the tumor is in early stage then a small surgery is done to remove the tumor, else the surgery will become extensive. The advantage of this type of surgery is preservation of normal tissues, lesser hospital stay and fewer post-surgery complications. The tracheotomy is not necessary in this type of surgery.
Radiation therapy: The radiation therapy is done with the help of x-rays to kill the cancer cells or to make them inactive. Usually this type of therapy is done to treat small tumor. It the tumor is large then the radiation therapy is combined with other therapy like chemotherapy to treat the cancer. If the tumor is so small that cannot be removed during the surgery can be removed with this radiation therapy. Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is the advanced therapy available in the radiation therapy. The IMRT uses computer program to decide the exact amount of the radiation to be given for the treatment. The High Dose Radiation (HDR) brachytherapy is another form of the radiotherapy used to radiate from the inside out spares that surround the other healthy region around the tumor. The main advantage of this type is it reduces the chance of surgery treatment.
Chemotherapy: Using of drugs to cure the tumors is called chemo therapy. The drugs are taken either through the veins are orally. The type of the treatment and the drugs to be taken depends on the nature of the throat cancer. If the tumor is large then the treatment is combination of the chemotherapy with other therapy or surgery. The chemotherapy is used to treat the cancer that has spread extensively beyond the throat region. Fractionated Dose Chemotherapy is a type of chemo therapy which divides the dosage of the drugs into smaller dose and is given over several days.
Angiogenesis inhibitors: This is a type of medication which is used to stop the growth of new blood vessels that is needed by the cancer cells to grow. Cetuximab or erbitux is used for this purpose. These drugs are recently approved to be used with chemotherapy to treat the tumor in the oral cavity.
