While the result is immediate, there is one major side effect to having a thrombosed hemorrhoid removed surgically. After the clot is removed there is almost always more clots forming causing more pain and discomfort.
Surgery for the thrombosed hemorrhoid is best done within the first 3 days of noticing the clot. After this time period a more extensive surgery may have to take place called a full Hemorrhoidectomy. This procedure removes the clot and the hemorrhoidal veins. This is a much longer procedure with an extensive recovery.
