Treatment of Acne Scars

Acne is an inflammatory skin condition that occurs when sebum (oil) and dead skin cells block the pore opening, causing sebum to build up inside the pore. Although acne is a common skin condition, if left untreated it can lead to severe inflammation and permanent scarring.

Acne scar laser surgery and removal came about as a result of lasers being developed that can treat acne scar lesions which inhibit the breeding and growth of bacteria that cause acne. Acne scar surgery and removal also assists in decreasing the secretion of sebaceous oil in the glands.

Acne is a very common disease. People who have it tend to have similar kinds of questions about it and its treatment. This section addresses some of the common questions asked by people with acne. Please remember that your dermatologist is always the best source of specific information about your individual health issues, including acne.

Treatment of Acne

There is a myriad of products sold for the treatment of acne, many of them without any scientifically proven effects.

The primary products used to treat acne are a pharmaceutical grade glycolic acid solution and a topical antibiotic. By applying a chemical solution to the skin, known as a chemical peel, mild scarring and certain types of acne may be treated.

Non-prescription medications are available over the counter to treat mild forms of acne. Topical antibiotics are commonly used in the treatment of acne and are often prescribed along with a retinoid or benzoyl peroxide.

Acne doesn't just lead to physical scars (which are really depressing and more damaging to the psyche) but more concerning it leads to emotional scarring. Well your choices in dealing with adult acne can be put into two categories. You can "roll over and just accept" that this is your lot in life or you can become active, take charge and find ways to help the situation. Acne may not be curable but it can be controlled and eventually you may even grow out of it.

The majority of acne products don't work. Every month, more and more companies decide selling acne products to acne sufferers is very profitable, so they quickly come up with a product, mix a few chemicals, add a little benzyl peroxide, and label the product as a guaranteed cure to acne.

Understanding this basic fact should help reduce some of the stigma attached to acne. It should also allow people who suffer from acne to take some comfort in knowing that they are not necessarily less clean than others. The truth is that they have very little control over what is going on beneath their skin.

Now, it kind of works the same way with acne sufferers... what helps one acne sufferer, doesn't always mean it'll help all the other acne sufferers. That's why some creams and lotions will work for a certain percentage of acne sufferers, but not all. Same with using drugs to fight acne. For some, it'll work, but not all... Same with supplements...helps some, not all.

Types of acne vulgaris:

1. Comedonal acne, which is a non-inflammatory acne

2. Papules and pustules of inflammatory acne

3. Nodular acne (inflammatory acne)

4. Inflammatory acne with hyperpigmentation.

Acne treatments for adults are different from treatments for teens. The same treatment you took in your teenage will not work for your adult acne. Teen acne requires mild ointments and gels while they will never cure adult acne. Benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid are effective in curing adult acne. While you are buying a product for adult acne, make sure that the product contains these chemicals for curing acne.

These creams are not generally sufficient for curing acne in adults. Gels and creams can do well only with teen acne. For adults, intensive treatments are required.

This type of acne almost always leaves a scar on the affected area. The scar usually takes a long time to heal and at times can leave pits and permanent marks on the skin. Scar creams can be used to treat cystic acne scars, but if the scar is deep spanning across several layers of the skin, then the topical creams and gels that promise instant cure could be of little help. It would be necessary to resort to other treatment methods like microdermabrasion, chemical peel, laser resurfacing etc.
