What are Colon Cleansing Foods?

If you've heard all the hype about colon cleansing and how it's supposed to help eliminate symptoms and prevent serious illness, you may be slightly tempted to give it a try. However, many people are uncomfortable with the idea or simply don't have the time to devote to doing a thorough colon cleanse. These can be performed over a period of a few days to over a month. During the cleansing, you have to have access to the restroom at all times. These products have laxatives or laxative-like properties that keep waste coming through your digestive tract. If you want to reap the benefits of a colon cleanse but don't have the time or the stomach for it, then colon cleansing foods might be the answer you're looking for.

Fiber:  Important in All Colon Cleansing Foods

Fiber is the natural tool that your colon uses to clean itself. Under normal circumstances, and with enough of this important ingredient in your diet, the colon does an excellent job of cleaning waste from your body.  Without the fiber it needs, waste builds up and the colon gets less efficient at cleaning as well as no longer being able to absorb water and nutrients that it normally does. That's why eating colon cleansing foods that are rich with fiber can help you restore your colon's ability to perform.

The Best Colon Cleansing Foods

There are three groups of foods that you need to eat to get the fiber you need. The first is whole grains which includes breads like whole grain wheat bread. By eating the whole grain, you increase the fiber intake and get more nutrients, too. This category includes more than just bread. There is quite a selection of breakfast cereals that are whole grain and are high in nutrition. You can start your day off with a healthy bowl of cereal in low fat or soy milk or enjoy an all bran muffin. These choices first thing in the morning will help get your day off to a healthy start. These colon cleansing foods don't have the high sugar content that many other common breakfast foods do. When you switch, you'll find that you soon are able to concentrate better throughout the day. Sugar causes peaks and drops with energy levels and interferes with concentration.

The second group of colon cleansing foods includes raw vegetables. Vegetables are eaten raw since you are trying to get the most fiber from them and it is broken down during cooking. Spinach and broccoli are some of the best choices for vegetables with high fiber content. When you eat a salad, don't just use Iceberg lettuce since it doesn't provide very much fiber. Mix spinach or other dark, leafy vegetables in to increase the fiber and nutritional value as well as he flavor.

The last group of colon cleansing foods includes fruits. The best fruit to use as a colon cleansing food is apples. They are high in fiber and other nutrients, and they are available year round. Citrus fruits, such as oranges and lemons, are high in vitamin C with is a natural antioxidant. These can also help prevent illness and are detoxifying agents.

When purchasing colon cleansing foods from the produce, it is always best to get fruits and vegetables that are organically grown. Pesticides in our food is one of the ingredients that can lead to waste build-up in our colons.
