The ringing in your ears is intolerable, plaguing you day and night and driving you insane. Ruining your life. If this sounds like you, it's highly likely that you have tinnitus. You not alone either. Some 66 million Americans suffer from the buzzing hissing or ringing in the ears. So what are the causes of ringing in the ears or tinnitus as it is known in medical circles? By reading this article you will find out 5 of the most common causes of ringing in the ears.

1.Exposure to Loud noise

Sudden exposure to a loud noise such as gun-fire or continued exposure to loud noises such as machinery or music can damage the delicate hairs in the inner ear or cochlea. This results in a misfiring of electrical impulses that tell the brain that a sound is being heard when it isn't.

2. Prescription Medications

Prescription medications are one of the main causes of ringing in the ears.

All of them have side-effects and unfortunately tinnitus is one of them. If you have a sensitivity to aspirin, you any experience a ringing in the ears after taking it. Although some antidepressants may reduce tinnitus symptoms, others will make them worse. Antibiotics used to treat sinus can make the mucous in the inner ear thicker and, since it cannot drain out of the Eustachian tubes, leads to mucous build-up, increased pressure and ear ringing.

3. Trauma

Did you know that we hear with our brain? The brain takes the electrical waves received by the ear and makes the sounds around us The brain also stores memory, experiences and sound and it tells the brain to hear these sounds. After a traumatic event such as an accident, the brain can make an emotional connection with a sound connected to the traumatic event and creates an ongoing memory loop which will continually replay that sound day or night.

4. Stress

Stress is one of the most overlooked causes of ringing in the ears. If you are subjected to stress through the death of a loved one, marital or work problems or money worries, bouts of tinnitus are often experienced. This is because the hypothalamus, responsible for producing the chemicals the body needs to function properly, is very susceptible to shock or grief. Sometimes this can lead to a breakdown between the ear and the brain, causing the sufferer to think he has heard a noise when he hasn‘t.

5. Poor Diet

A poor diet weakens the immune system, making the body susceptible to disease which can make tinnitus symptoms worse. Too many caffeinated drinks such as tea, coffee, cola and cocoa can increase tinnitus noise by increasing and unnatural high and low and anxiety or depression in some people. Highly processed food and saturated fats increase blood pressure, one of the direct causes of tinnitus. Alcohol has this effect too while a lack of fresh fruit and vegetables means that the body is depleted of the vitamins and minerals is needs for the auditory nerves to function well and promote a good flow of oxygen to the inner ear.
