What To Know About Natural Therapies

When you are making decisions about your health, you have no choice but to do everything in your power to act wisely.  The stakes are too high to make cavalier judgments or to operate on gut instinct.  You need to be informed and to act wisely.  That is true in all areas of well-being, but it is a particular priority when applied to natural therapies.

That is because you are operating without the more tightly woven safety net that exists for mainstream medical therapies.  Doctors and “establishment medicine” are subject to a wide variety of regulations.  Their practices are governed and the medications they dispense are cleared through significant testing by regulatory agencies.  You need to be a smart consumer in these situations, but you can do so against a backdrop that provides some level of consumer protection.

When you are dealing with natural therapies, you are working without a net.  The government agencies that subject prescription and even many over-the-counter medications to extensive testing do not evaluate natural remedies.  Practitioners of natural therapies are not strictly licensed like medical doctors.  They do not have minimal educational requirements, are not required to engage in continuing education and are not subject to the kind of tight licensing requirements applied to physicians.

Natural therapies can offer tremendous potential.  Countless people report experiencing amazing turnarounds when battling a variety of medical problems and attribute their success to natural techniques.  Even those within the medical establishment are beginning to broaden their horizons, recognizing the potential and power of some natural solutions to a variety of ailments.

Yet there are opportunists and misguided individuals within the world of natural health who will make big promises without the ability to back them up.  They promise results but deliver only disappointment.  In some cases, their natural remedies can actually do more harm than good.

So, how can you be a smart consumer?  It starts with a commitment to gathering and assessing quality information and data.  Do not feel comfortable with an idea solely on the basis of the information provided by the persons selling it.  Look for objective third-party assessments of the therapy under consideration.  Investigate findings in serious academic and scientific journals where the claims of often unlicensed naturalists are put to the test in carefully controlled, repeatable, double-blind experiments.  Seek out unbiased information and explanations of therapies.  Do not settle for mere advertising materials and anecdotal reports.

Natural therapies can do wonderful things.  There is no doubt about their remarkable potential.  Unfortunately, there’s also no doubt that the virtually unregulated world of natural health solutions has more than its fair share of charlatans, thieves and well-intend (but ill-informed) amateurs.  Keep that in mind as you investigate natural therapies to improve your life.
