A: Hi Cal,

Forums are an ideal way of connecting with like-minded people particularly if your webpage and business is relevant to the comments being submiited or is really of use to advice seekers. Just by adding backlinks to your site and by using relevant keywords you can increase visibility immensely!

A: Hi Cal - posting in forums CAN help with the backlinks to your site and can definitely help with building your credibility. You'll have to make sure though that the backlinks are followed and do not have the nofollow attribute to them. Also, having many links from the same site won't help you as much as having many links from many different sites.

Hope this helps.

Thanks!
Joe

Great advice Joe! One quick question- How do you tell if Dofollow or Nofollow? Bet you know, which will help me tremendously. The bigger the forum membership, pr, and authority the better, than a lower quality forum to link to? TKS!

A: Participate only in forums that are aligned to your site, and when you join these forums, make sure to contribute, not just because you want to plaster your links. Anyway, most forums now are "nofollow" but as people in the forum get to know you, they might start going to your site and linking to it on their own. So yes, participating in forums is still a good practice for SEO, just not in the way you think.

Hi Cal! Click on "Page" and then "source"; then do a control F for "follow". Whether the forum is "dofollow" or "nofollow" it should come up in the search. Otherwise try "dofollow" and "nofollow" separately. I hope this helps you.

A: I think if you run a search in any of the search engines the real time added content will be shown in the result page. I have to add that others are right that there are no follow links, but if somebody clicks the forum and read your content will find your imbound link and even your signature which probably contains a link to your site. And even if they are nofollow links, the big G for ex. follows it I am sure.

A: Is the "No follow" factor really that much of an issue? It all depends on your intent. If you are simply trying to generate more traffic to your site, it won't matter in the slightest that the links are "No follow", it will still take that person to your site, voila one more visitor to check out your lovely new creation. Obviously there is no point wasting your time putting a link on a website that receives no traffic. But if your reason for link building is because you want to boost your page rank and SERPS then a "No follow" link will definitely hinder this strategy. Not all search engines treat "No follows" the same by the way, unofficially Yahoo actually ignore this attribute completely!

A: Absolutely right, active in a forum will increase your credibility, especially when you answer the questions with the right answer, you can use that opportunity to simply refer your link.
the more credibility you established, then all the references you provide will always bring in traffic to your blog

A: Seems like the most important part of the question is being neglected. If you provide quality information in the forums you'll build credibility, trust, connection and social proof with the forum members and the amount of backlinks won't even matter.

If you are interested in getting high quality backlinks, I'd recommend Traffic Geyser (currently running a trial offer of $1 for 21-days). TubeMogul is good and free, but for a $1, TG is a steal!

A: Posting in certain forums can help to boost your credibility and increase links to your site however most forum links carry little to no weight so they aren't great for link building.

If you're looking to build your credibility, go to where other experts in your field go to answer questions. You can also use sites like Facebook to increase your credibility by making updates that are about your area of expertise or answer questions people ask.

If you're looking to do some link building and increase your credibility, I would suggest doing some blogging or guest blogging on popular blogs.

A: Yes it is helpful. Just ask yourself, "Is it relavant to what I do?" Is the forum relavant, the question, the answer? All of the specifics mentioned already, do matter, as far as wether it is a "nofollow" or not or how much pr "weight" the forum carries. But the short answer is yes it does help.

A: Participating in forums helps with identifying your knowledge of that particular field/subject. Linking back to your site adds "another notch" to your site. It is only one factor of SEO - but yes, it does help.
