A: The reasons are varied.... A better problem description would be helpful.

Does it lock only when you are using a certain program or combination of a few programs? Did it only start locking up after a recent software update? Did it start locking up after a recent program installation? These are questions searching for a software problem. Uninstalling the offending program/update can fix these problems.

Is the computer hot? Heat is not a laptop's friend. If your laptop is getting too hot, this can damage it. I have seen heated laptops appear to freeze. Make sure that the vents are clear and any fans are working to allow heat to escape. I had such a laptop that once so damaged it just continued downhill. I was able to use it for limited periods of time so I was able to get some additional usage out of it by imposing a time limit and then letting it cool down again.... As I said, heat is not a laptop's friend. Some processors include technology to slow down as they overheat to reduce damage.

Could be RAM. Could be a bad sector on the hard drive. Could be a number of things. I would start by asking the first few questions, such as when and why does it happen? Certain programs? Only recently? Is it overheating?

Also, do you have an anti-virus solution installed? A known, trustworthy program? If not, you may have picked up a computer virus which could be part of this problem.
