A: Typically, retirement investments are accounts where you've saved and invested money that are designed to grow in value over time and produce cash flow (passive income) for you to live on later when you retire.

Too often, financial advisors only offer their clients one type of retirement account...one full of mutual funds. But the truth is, a retirement investment can be a portfolio of rental real estate (cash flow = rental payments from renters), a business that is mostly on autopilot (internet businesses, parking lots, ATM machines, vending machines and a whole slew of other options), oil investments and of course, stock, bond and mutual fund investments that pay dividends on a regular basis.

Retirement accounts can either be tax-advantaged (protected from taxes until you reach a certain age) or not. Just because an account IS tax-deferred (Traditional IRA or 401k or 403b), doesn't mean it's the right place for YOUR money. There are retirement account where the money you put into it is after tax money but the account grows tax-free (ROTH IRA) that are often the better choice.

There is no one answer as to how you should save and invest for YOUR older years but there's one question that you should be thinking about and this is it...

What are you doing to make sure you can eventually quit working for money and know that your money is working for you?
