A: You can make a bid at an auction, either by raising a number or a placard, or sometimes vocally. Sometimes an auction is called a silent auction. Bids are more toward making an offer for an object, or maybe even a job contract.

A: A bid is what you do at an auction, a auction is where you go to bid.
