Alkaline Diet

Long time ago, our ancestors consumed a very different diet than we do today. They ate minimally processed plants and animal foods but as agricultural techniques was discovered, the diet became just as ancient as the people who ate them.

Stone tools allowed grains to be consumed, and when the automated rolling and sifting devices were invented, the grain was further refined and became much more consumable. With the domestication of livestock, followed by livestock husbandry, the alkaline diet was changed more and more. Milk, cheese, other milk products and meat were slowly introduced. Meat intake skyrocketted too when the technology of feeding grain to livestock emerged, allowing livestock to fatten up at a faster rate. And once the Industrial Revolution began, sugar consumption was also increased.

Almost all of the food we eat is metabolize and ends up as an acid or alkaline substance that is released into the blood stream. Grains, fish, meat, poultry, shellfish, milk, cheese and salt all produce acid. So as these foods intake increased over time; our previously alkaline diets began to slowly disappear.

The problem with an acid diet is that it aids in the ageing process and development of degenerative diseases such as Osteoporosis and Cancer. An acidic environment in our body causes uncomfortable symptoms such as lethargic, excessive mucous production, nasal congestion, frequent colds and flu, anxiety, irritability, ovarian and benign breast cysts, poly-cystic ovaries and the common headaches.

Our blood is slightly alkaline in nature, lying in the range of 7.35 -7.45 pH. Since our bodies are alkaline in nature, it is more healthy for us to practice alkaline diet instead of the acid diet. An alkaline diet is emphasized on increasing the consumption of fresh fruit, vegetables, roots and tubers, nuts, and legumes. Alkaline diets are used to combat the body's acidity caused by the typical diet that came from consuming food and beverages like soda, meat, dairy, salt and grains.

The theory of the alkaline diet is that what we eat should reflect the pH level of our blood.  Alkaline rich food as well as the introduction of alkaline water will make alkaline diet possible. It's interesting to note that alkaline water has the ability to help the body absorb the alkalis in a more efficient manner than food does.

What is an alkaline diet? In a nutshell, an alkaline foods diet (also known as the alkaline ash diet, alkaline acid diet, alkalising and the acid alkaline diet) is a healthy eating lifestyle based on eating foods that metabolise (burn) to leave an alkaline residue (ash) of minerals such as calcium, iron, zinc, magnesium and copper. Foods are therefore classified as alkaline, acidic or neutral according to the pH of the solution created with their ash in water.
