Free radicals steal electrons by colliding with a stable atom until it breaks apart and then the needed electron can be taken. These electrons can come from anywhere, fat, protein or DNA. To summarize, molecules need equal amounts of electrons, and if they lose just one, they are unpaired and will fight to fix it, causing oxidation.
