Discover Building Collagen

Let’s face it.  Building collagen fibers is something that the human body is very good at.  Creating them synthetically has been a goal of scientists for many years.  Finally, they believe they’ve got it right.  The technology will be used for surgery, burn victims and (at some point in the future) it may be an element of cosmetic surgery.

Assuming that you are in relatively good health, you won’t need that kind of technology, because other researchers have been investigating something called cellular rejuvenation technology.  Their goal is to stimulate the body’s production of elastic fibers through nutritional supplementation and topically applied creams.  One of the questions that have been investigated is this one.  Do collagen pills help your skin by stimulating the production of new fibers?

The supplements contain protein and protein is essential for building collagen fibers, as is vitamin C and many other nutrients.  If you are not getting enough protein in your diet, (the recommended amount is at least a half gram per pound of body weight per day), then any protein supplement could be beneficial.  But, what does the research say?  Do collagen pills help your skin to grow new cells or fibers?

There hasn’t been much research on the subject.  Research has shown that soy and fish protein improve the skin’s structure and firmness.  Another nutrient, omega-3 fatty acids, has been shown to improve the skin’s firmness by 10%.  Antioxidant supplements have been shown to help protect the skin from sun damage.  The vitamins A, C and E are beneficial for acne, eczema, psoriasis and other conditions.  But, do collagen pills help your skin?  There’s no reason to believe so.

Collagens are not complete proteins.  They contain only three amino acids.  After taking the supplement, it would be broken down into the component amino acids.  The body would then use those amino acids for whatever purpose necessary.  It could use them for building collagen, repairing joint damage, replacing muscle tissue or for any other necessary purpose.

Here’s a good question.  Do collagen pills help your skin as much as a good topically applied cream?  So far, researchers have not found a supplement that is as beneficial to the skin’s health and appearance as a topically applied cream containing coenzyme Q10, the protein keratin, wakame kelp extracts, grape seed oil and other nutrients.

The process of building collagen occurs in the dermis layer.  The layers that we see are the epidermis.  There are no blood vessels in the epidermis.  Nutrients are absorbed through diffusion, from the lower layers, but they can also be absorbed when they are applied to the top, outermost layer.

Do collagen pills help your skin to glow or look firmer?  Will they reduce wrinkles or repair sun damage?  Will they reduce redness or inflammation?  No, they won’t do any of those things.  But, creams containing the ingredients mentioned above have been shown to do all of those things, while stimulating the production of elastic fibers.  If building collagen fibers is your goal, you just need to find a good cream.
