How to Treat Oily Skin

Posted: Nov 15, 2010 |Comments: 0 |

Each skin type requires its own type of care and treatment. Oily skin is a particularly sensitive skin type requiring care that might seem counter-intuitive.  Here are some guidelines on how to best care for your oily skin.

Cleansing

People with oily skin often make the mistake of washing until they are "squeaky clean" to remove all signs of surface oil.  Scrubbing vigorously with improper formulations actually encourages the body to produce excessive oil to compensate for the freshly over-washed skin; this process is called reactive seborrhea.  While you should ensure you have adequately cleansed, you should always avoid over-washing.

Moisturizing

Many people with oily skin skip moisturizing as they believe it causes the skin to feel even greasier.  And it can – if you use the wrong moisturizer.  However, if you choose a light, oil-free moisturizer, moisturizing will greatly benefit your skin.  It will actually help reduce shine on the face, sealing in hydration while discouraging oil production.

Facials

The glycolic and salicylic acids found in facials help to exfoliate the skin, removing the oil and any potential flakiness.  Salicylic acid also reduces the acne that typically accompanies oily skin. An additional benefit to addressing your skin care issue with a facial is the opportunity to enjoy a relaxing and pleasant self care experience that contributes to your overall sense of well being.

Astringents

For extremely oily skin, non-alcohol astringents are helpful in managing surface oil.  Apply an astringent only once a day to keep from removing all the helpful oils on your skin.

Skin Care Products

To pick the best skin care products for your skin type, consult with an Austin cosmetic dermatologist.  Short of professional advice, a general rule of thumb is, if it doesn't feel good, don't use it.  If your cleanser leaves your skin feeling dry and dehydrated, it is not the right one for you.  If your moisturizer makes your skin feel tight and stretched, find another one.  The same applies to make-up.  Glominerals is a healthy make-up product formulated for sensitive skin types.

For a personalized analysis of your specific skin type, call Zimmet Vein & Dermatology.  Their Austin skin care office can advise you on which products and treatments will offer the best results for your skin type.
