How to Design With Large Rugs

Large rugs are stately, regal, impressive, and above all fun to decorate with: Providing the following tips are utilized.

Steps

  1. Always start with the rug.
  2. Decide on a size that would be suitable by laying out newspaper. Generally 2 to 3 feet from each wall, or follow standard large rug sizes of 9x12, 10x14, 12x15, 12x18 and 12x20
  3. Shopping by price is not the best way to search. A large rug will be with you for generations. Every carpet is unique, so the carpet that speaks to your style and decor is the one that should be chose.
  4. View as many rugs as possible online and in person to determine styles you like.  The more carpets you see in person at a local or online rug gallery and have the opportunity to feel with your hands, the easier your selection will become, and the more defined your taste.

Tips

  • Deciding between medallion and an allover pattern is easy -if there is a lot of furniture to be placed in the room, especially in the center, you may want to opt for an allover repeating pattern.
  • Walk on your large rugs with socks.  This will slowly polish the wool over time to give it a healthy sheen.
  • Rotate your large rug or carpet once every few years to help evenly distribute wear or traffic patterns.
