How to Play Citadels Card Game
Bruno Faidutti created yet another hit with his Citadels card game and the accompanying expansion Dark City. Of German inspiration, the game requires a bit of role play and strategy as you bluff your opponents and work on acquiring the most points by the time someone places their eight land card.
The mechanics of the game are fairly simple. Each player starts with two gold pieces and four district cards. On your turn you can either draw two more gold pieces or play a single district card, spending the number of gold pieces listed on the card. What makes the game interesting is that each player can have a different character card every round and use his unique action. Designed for 2-8 players, there are eight character cards, nine if using the expansion. All eight are used in the round even if you have fewer players.
When the game first begins the oldest player goes first and is considered the king. He places a certain number of random character cards face up and face down on the table, depending on the number of players. Then he looks at the cards remaining and chooses one for himself. The pile moves to the next person and they draw one and so on until the final player draws his card and places the rest of the pile face down. This is where bluffing and strategy come in. All the character cards are numbered and the king calls out each number beginning with 1 and finishing with 8 (9 if using the expansion). When ones card is called, the player flips it over and takes their turn.
As you know there are eight character cards, it becomes a process of elimination to see what cards your fellow players picked. Each has a unique ability like number 1, the assassin, can name a character and that character loses his turn. If he figures out that someone may have picked the merchant, he could say kill the merchant and make a player with the merchant card lose his turn. If no one had the merchant card, he wasted his character's action. Each of the characters have unique actions like the thief can steal another character's gold and the architect can play up to three districts on his turn. Some character cards also give bonus gold depending on which of the five color district land cards you played. The fun lies in the strategy of sabotaging your opponent and benefiting yourself.
