Advanced Photo Taking Tips

Online photo sharing is a fun way to share your favorite photos with friends and family. Needless to say, when you post your pictures up on a website for all to see, you want people to look at them. The thing about pictures, though, is that just because one has been taken doesn't necessarily mean it's worth looking at. No one wants to look at picture after picture that is too dark, too washed out, crooked, or otherwise just not pleasant to look at.

As important as it is to choose the right camera and learn how to properly edit photos, learning to take good photos in the first place is absolutely vital. A bad picture can only be improved so much with editing, so you should aim to make every picture you take a great picture. While photography is an art, that doesn't mean that an amateur can't take amazing pictures to share with their friends and family.

A Few Useful Tips

The first tip to keep in mind, especially when taking pictures of people, is to get in close where the details will really stand up. This will, of course, make a lot of people nervous, but if you can get them to let their guard down you can take some great pictures. If you get too far away, you can't clearly see people's facial expressions and features - so what's the point of taking a picture of them anyway? This isn't to suggest you stand right next to your subject, but don't be afraid to get a little closer than you might otherwise.

Secondly, keep in mind that people aren't statues. While it can be tempting to try and catch your subjects in the center of the frame every time, this can quickly grow stale. Of course, you don't want your subject to be off at the corner of the photo, but setting the subject just a tiny bit off center can make for more interesting pictures. If you're uncomfortable with the idea, you should experiment - just take the picture as you normally would, and then take another one with this suggestion in mind.

When taking pictures of friends and family, try to avoid always organizing the picture, getting everyone to sit in some predetermined place, and telling them to smile. Most people aren't great actors, and their fake smiles look obviously fake. Instead, try catching your subjects when they aren't enjoying a moment of genuine mirth. Or, instead of using some cliché like "say cheese," save a good joke or story for right before you shoot the picture. That way, you'll get a genuine smile that will be all the more memorable.

The most important tip for the aspiring photographer is just to keep taking pictures. As the saying goes, "practice makes perfect." Keep taking pictures, expanding your photo collection, and getting comments from those who view your photos. In no time you'll learn exactly how to take the best pictures you and your camera are capable of taking.
