Outside the Apollo Theater, you may cross street vendors, good restaurants, historic landmarks and other interesting attractions. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The Apollo Theater is so much more than an historic landmark that you would love visiting the place right in the heart of Harlem. The history of the Apollo Theater dates back to 1914 when the theater was constructed on 125th Street.

The theater grew to prominence when it ran a live version of Ralph Cooper, Sr"s popular radio show, Amateur Nite Hour. The show launched the careers of legendary artists like Ella Fitzgerald, James Brown, Michael Jackson, D"Angelo and Lauryn Hill.

In 1935, Bessie Smith launched Billie Holiday who mesmerized the audience with her undeniable style and talent. The Apollo Theater quickly became known "Place where Stars are Born and Legends are Made".

The Apollo Theater maintained its position as the United States" most popular arena for emerging while quickly becoming "home" to thousands of major performance artists, fans, and patrons of the arts from around the world.

The Apollo featured a show called "Jazz a la Carte" and donated all the proceeds of that show were donated to the Harlem Children"s Fresh Air Fund. In 1960s and 1970s, the theater fell into decline. It was revived in 1983 when it obtained federal, state, and city landmark status.

In 1991, it was sold to the State of New York. Today, drawing an estimated 1.3 million visitors annually, the Apollo Theater is being run by a nonprofit organization, the Apollo Theater Foundation Inc.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Apollo Theater is considered as the bastion of African-American culture and achievement. On December 15, 2005, it launched the first phase of its refurbishment which included the facade and the new light-emitting diode (LED) marquee.

To date, the Apollo"s renovation is the country"s most expensive and advanced refurbishment of a landmark theater. In the last month of December, the theater put up on display the body of James Brown as a memorial to his life and career. It resulted in once again brining the legendary Harlem theater back into the public spotlight.

Today, the Apollo Theater is enjoying a status of being one of the most fascinating chronicles in American history. Akiko Wada became the first Asian to perform at the traditionally African-American associated venue in September 2008.
