Coldplay's latest album Viva La Vida or Death and All his Friends debuted at number one in no less than 17 countries, garnered the U.K. band seven Grammy nominations and sold nearly 7 million copies. So is the Chris Martin-fronted group taking the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" approach on their next release, also to be helmed by prolific producer Brian Eno? Nope; according to http://MTV.com, Coldplay is currently in their West London studio working on a new batch of songs with Eno and Martin is nowhere to be found. Well-known for his innovative recording tactics such as having musicians pick up instruments they don't know how to play, Eno has banned Martin from the studio as an experiment.
According to a studio mole posting a blog on http://Colplay.com: "Chris has been banned from the studio for these first two weeks. No, before the rumor mill cracks its way excitedly into life, this does not indicate any kind of split in the camp. This is an experience of Brian's." This will give the rest of the band (guitarist John Buckland, bassist Guy Berryman and Will Champion) a chance to create their own sound without Chris' interpretation. No word yet on exactly what Coldplay is working on-an EP or an LP-but Martin is reportedly working with another artist in a nearby studio and the quartet will reconvene at a later date.
Chris Martin & Co. released their debut hit single "Yellow" in 2000, just one of the pop-rock ballads from their debut album, Parachutes, which would earn Coldplay instant commercial success and critical acclaim. The Radiohead comparisons began early on, but fans found Coldplay more accessible than the Thom Yorke-fronted fellow U.K. band and Parachutes eventually went multiplatinum in addition to securing the band their first Grammy award. In 2002 Coldplay released their sophomore album, A Rush of Cold Blood to the Head, and earned two more Grammys. "Clocks," "In My Place" and "The Scientist" all enjoyed ample radio airtime and landed on the Billboard charts and the band hit the road in support of the album. Coldplay's world tour in support of A Rush of Cold Blood to the Head was chronicled in the CD/DVD package Live 2003.
In the summer of 2005 Coldplay released their third album X&Y, led by the hit single "Speed of Sound." The album featured producer Danton Supple (The Cure, Morrissey) in lieu of longtime producer Ken Nelson and went on to sell over eight million copies in its first year. One of the most well-known rock bands in the world by this time, Coldplay switched producers again when they began work on their next album, stepping into the studio with Brian Eno, known for his work of U2's Joshua Tree and with Radiohead. Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends was released in June 2008 and featured a broader range of instrumentation than Coldplay's usual piano and guitar laced tracks.
